I wish I’d done that when my mom died I just went with the funeral home that was across the street from the hospitallol Thankfully, in Canada , it’s law that all funeral expenses have to be transparent and posted online We just wanted a straight cremation, no funeral/memorial, no niches, etc and thankfully it wasn’t that costly, although I had to borrow money to pay for it anyway I found out later a funeral home across town would have done this for way less and we could have paid just what we could afford, and they’d wait til the gov’t death benefit came through My mom had it worse, when my grandma died she had pre-paid, this was prior to all the laws, and they got soaked to the tune of over 5000 Gross

we have one funeral home ,many graveyards and one natural burial even that is expensive, I don't get,they bury you, wait till just bones, dig you up and reuse that area,so why should you have to pay $4000?

Funny you should mention to ask your "mom" what she wants in terms of a burial I tried so hard to find out and my mom REFUSED to talk about it and would just say "do whatever you want" She was so afraid of dying and wouldn't even give an idea She also had less than half of the expense saved for it, so we went into the sale of her belongings to fund it Very sad, so now I have made known what I want and have begun putting funds aside In the near future, I plan on doing a prepaid cremation

As my hubby is in the final life insurance business…another tipyou can get a casket at sams, Costco or other online retailers for thousands less than the funeral home And often, they are the same exact ones Ordering online, they will deliver it directly to the funeral homebrbrAnother thing to be cognizant of… if you purchase a pre planned funeral from a funeral home, keep in mind they could go out of business and you’d have no recourse Small, whole life final expense insurance could be a good option

15 years ago, one of my best friends died unexpectedly My friend’s husband had a bill of $23k! That’s a lot! And they already owned the plot! About a week later, the husband’s grandmother passed Another $18k and they buried one on top of the other! There wasn’t anything that I saw that warranted any of these costs! It made me Ill, thinking about $40k being sunk into the ground! It also made me disgusted with the funeral home! The poor guy was trying his best to figure his way through massive grief and I felt like they took huge advantage of him!

My Mom prearranged her direct cremation with a local memorial society I arranged for services at the church we used to attend and they charged less than $200 for the whole service with music and refreshments afterwards She is interred in the church's columbarium and I believe the fee was $200 for that So, the total bill was less than $1200 and she had a very nice and dignified memorial service in an amazing old church with stained glass windows

My childhood best friend’s dad worked at our local funeral home So when my brother died, he helped us out He explained that the cheapest coffin in the showroom, which no one ever orders because it’s a putrid shade of green, can also come in silver for the same price and it looks great

That us why my spouse & I already paid for our eventuality We picked a reasonable funeral home, we told them what our wishes were, we haggled and picked what we wanted Both of us are vets, and my husband already built our boxes (stored in our home), based on the specs he was told by the VA cemetary (I actually would prefer burial in my pasture)brNo viewing, no embalming, money set aside in case of out-of-state passing (embalming & air fare), under $6000 for both of us Less for 2 of us to be interred than for my sister-in-law to be cremated with no viewingbrbrKids & grandkids can have a memorial afterwards if they wish, go out for a meal, or have a party if they like But we didn't want to burden anyone with what we see as our responsibility

🎉I know everyone expects some like soft spoken thing about how to save money but lemme say, when I die it is going to be a party with cheap colorful flowers, a painting wall to mix my ashes in the paint and everyone gets to bring their own food And maybe with my access wealth a few strippers and finding someone to take care of my dozens of lizards- Make it cheap but also the biggest party anyone has ever seen, and everyone is invited Cut the strippers if I'm poor though I am buying them myself- I know it has like no relevance but I am tired and decided to rant-😋

My parents paid for everything before my mother died My mother planned her memorial service, who would sing, who was going to speak, etc a few days before she passed away from cancer she was working on her obituary Yes she was organized except that she decided to donate her body to science about a week before she died We were able to make that happen Her planning saved us all a lot of stress when she did pass away

Also if you are not cremated and plan on a coffin burial - you do not have to be embalmed The funeral home will push you to embalm - the guy actually pinched his nose and said phew! Well we stood firm and said if dad smelled we would just keep the lid closed Guess what - he didn't smell and he didn't look bad either Also embalming only last for a few months so you aren't really preserving the corpse
