Well compared to Germany the trains in the US doesn’t seem to be that expensive A ticket to travel all across Germany can cost about 100 € or even more Might sound cheaper than in the US and looking at shorter routes it might be true but Germany isn’t a big country Once you cross borders to another European country it get‘s difficult With Amtrak you can even travel from coast to coast for about 500 Dollar or less if you are lucky In Europe this would be impossible

They should cater to dog owners more— have a car for owners and their dogs, no weight restrictions I would take it everywhere with my 90lb dog, even when slower and more expensive than flying Many dog owners dont want to put their animal in the cargo hold, and they are honest about their pets not being “service dogs”

This amtrak system is an abysmal failure The US government has spent so many billions of dollars on Amtrak to have built out a complete dedicated railway system throughout the USA this is a pathetic continued waste of taxpayer money Look at countries in Europe where you can get tickets for one day to ride anywhere cheaper than here

Living in the NE corridor in Delaware about halfway between NYC and DC, I've used Amtrak many many times until they started flexing the ticket prices It became more cost efficient to drive to DC and to Jersey City (using PATH subway to cross the Hudson into NYC) Philadelphia and Baltimore were too close and using commuter rail from SEPTA or MARC was easier brbrBut the biggest issues with all of this besides the flexing costs are the service hours A few years ago the last train left NYC and DC around 10 I think out of NYC is now before 9 PM which makes it too inconvenient if I have a dinner meeting for workbrbrI want to see passenger rail succeed and I would prefer to use it, but if it's only for the 9-5 worker, it is better for me to drive

No one takes the train in North America It's just to vast of a land and there was never any focus on efficient routes so it's not convenient or economical Travel to Europe to see how it's done where there was a proper focus to build up the infrastructure at some point in time

it should NOT be cheaper to fly, if the energy used by each transport mode was evaluated , penalties should be levied on the most polluting to encourage the most energy efficient mode of travel This makes sense as we ALL end up picking up the tab for climate mitigation thats results form carbon pollution so those most responsible should pay the most Aircraft can consume 27 times more energy than rail transport , although of course it all depends on how well each service is used and how modern the equipment

I took a twenty hour ride from Baltimore to Florida in December 2022 People thought I was crazy for doing that, but I really wanted to take a solo train ride It was a cool experience Although I’d love to travel via train more often, it was indeed very expensive I could only afford the one way down & ended up flying back The one way totaled $313 The air flight back was $246

People speak of countless reasons for this but I never heard anyone mention 2 facts: that most tracks are privately owned (by freight companies) and that many trains run on inefficient diesel vs electric propulsion I would say those 2 factors alone account for quite a difference Plus passenger traffic is heavily subsidized in Europe (I do not imply one should be proud of that ;-))
