Yes I get it Many people are in favor of education as it is and they have their own opinion on how the system can be slightly tweaked I write on here because I hope that people will start to look outside the box The general population's ideas on education are extremely narrow, uncreative, and out of date I only hope that everyone that reads this will, not take my words for truth, but go out and start looking for new ideas they haven't heard before It's time education evolved Comment from : @DevinFraze |
Great example, but I think you are looking at it all wrong The person who sees no need for math will natural find a useful purpose to learn it through the means of their passion instead possibly just in a way similar to the example you gave This could even lead to a possible interest in math that was born through the positive interactions of their current interests If the art kid never learns to hate math by being forced to take it, they might actually learn to like it and see it as useful Comment from : @DevinFraze |
The key is letting students think they have choice, when it's really us teachers who set up the framework in which they work Comment from : @0truth0 |
So many educators focus on reform, when what we need is and end to the monopoly that the standardized education system has on our children Why not let a wide variety of schools teach with different methodes and let the successful ones rise out Why not let each community choose a school that fits it's culture and heritage
As far as basics, kids have been shown that they can master 6 years of mathematics in 6 weeks if aloud to wait until they have a desire to do so Comment from : @DevinFraze |
You say my views are idealistic, by my guess is that you have not interacted with unschoolers I however have worked with them in multiple areas across the country and know from experience that it works And it doesn't just work, it often far exceeds kids of traditional schooling Now perhaps unschooling isn't the solution to the many problems plaguing the education system today, but I think choice is Choice to go to a traditional school if that suits you best or to attend an alternative one Comment from : @DevinFraze |
You're talking about an idealistic view Basic skills are usually not challenging; they're the hoops you jump through before you get to deep and insightful discussions, such as fractals and differentials "their value becomes obvious as one gets older": this is true, but it's also harder to learn your tables when you're 14 and you're stuck wondering how to factor I'm not against discovery in school, but teachers should guide the students in a general direction (cont'd later) Comment from : @0truth0 |

Check out John Taylor Gatto and John Holt and Unschooling for some more info Comment from : @DevinFraze |
It isn't boring when a student chooses to be there Skills like basic mathematics can be learned easily on the students own time and with little persuading Their value becomes natural apparent as one gets older No hook or intro necessary
It isn't as impractical as you think not to force kids to sit through a lesson on binomial questions (especially if they wont ever use it) If they are instead taught how to study up on their passions, they will become life long autodidacts Comment from : @DevinFraze |

starting at 0:08 the challenge accepted face is shown in real life :D Comment from : @NarutoSage23 |

Also, while challenging/pushing a student for no reason other than to feel powerful/for your own ends is being a dictator challenging/pushing a student for the sake of that student's education is being a teacher Having a teacher tell you that they expect better of you feels terrible; that's the idea, work harder to avoid disappointing your teacher I don't know many people that work harder just for the sheer fun of it Comment from : @Alfonzo227 |
To those saying that this is an example of teachers "intimidating" students or some nonsense: challenging a student and making them push what they think they can do is NOT intimidation This mentality that teachers have to be super-nice to students and that challenging their students is harassment is ridiculous, and I suspect it's linked to the increasing popular idea that personal responsibility doesn't exist If you are demotivated by a challenging teacher, that's your fault, not theirs Comment from : @Alfonzo227 |
It shows the power teachers have They could intimidate and their students tremble with fear, but most of them don`t, they use their power to inspire Comment from : @Crystalvampire66 |

Teachers like this make students like me hate school Comment from : @LisaNielsen |

I really don't understand how this shows teachers in a good light They come off as dictators that completely disregard the child I see angry teachers and unhappy children in this video Comment from : @JenJuvenile |
