As a parent of an adult with autism, we have to help them a lot I don't mind helping, but it burns my generosity when they continually spend the little money they have on treats on the way from work or other similar things We just gave them 40 for an unplanned expense, and the next day, they told me they went to the convenience store for a treat I want to approach with love, but honestly, this keeps continuing, and I’m getting angry It's why I researched this subject I want to be gentle but firm about the help we will continue giving when these decisions continue

for me i struggle with many issues, a lot of the legal forms used are very vague and confusing causing me to get overwhelmed, on top of that many financial advice given to me is conflicting and nothing is really clear as being able to plan for the future requires not only a great amount of flexibility but also the ability to multitask and deal with hidden context that no one ever really spells out for you Also the value of a dollar is never really clear as things like inflation confuse me I cant even handle going to a bank as the terms confuse me and they spew information at me a mile a minute

Thanks for making this video! It's so helpful to understand the challenges We recently discovered an autistic relative is in e 30s struggling with money It was revealed only because e was recently scammed on the phone by a person impersonating the police demanding personal banking information I am now helping with budgeting and finding creative ways to help educate I think finances in our day and age can get overwhelming when our mind is wired to constantly want things sad that hard earned money was lost but the silver lining is we now know that help is needed and will try our best to intervene

I’m 18 and autistic and my parents have decided to send me money in smaller payments every 2 weeks instead of in a bigger payment every month This is because I really struggle with managing money I am getting a social worker for my autism soon though so hopefully they will help me with managing life

My son lives in his own apt near mine, and though I am his rep payee, and the card is in my name, he has possession of it He pays his bills, but beyond that, spends most of his money on video games and fast food He does save some of it, but when he wanted a gaming laptop, he spent much of his savings on it He does pretty well, all things considered We are working on the concept of saving money for a rainy day

Thank you so much for this video Dan I really struggle with 'Do I need this?' Vs 'Do I want this?' And it's so so so SO hard to save money But that's a good idea running it past someone before you buy it and Im going to start doing that because I think it can really help And a video on budgeting apps would be VERRRRRRY helpful because I need help I don't have to pay bills or anything yet because I still live with my parents but I've got to pay my mum $580 from our trip to Melbourne and it's hard because I'm only getting $153 a month from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) And between those payments I'm spending money, and it's so hard!!!!!! I started keeping tabs on all of our finances through an Excel spreadsheet It helps me tremendously to feel safe and secure and understand what we actually cost, like how much on average for food or children's clothes per month

Thank you this was really practical and helpful A follow up video on apps that work well for people with autism would be really helpful, especially ones that allow you to set up reminders to actually check balances and statements, as well as manage payments I’m finding that there are loads of apps, but remembering to manage them is an issue I don’t want to overburden the person I’m supporting with too many different apps/techniques – it would be better to just have two or three that are easy to use, and also remind the user to check in regularly

But putting stuff on Autopay is messing me up big time! I don't remember to cancel stuff brbrI have a gym membership for example that I got in 2019 right before covid lockdown I've NEVER used it brbrBut I can't remember to cancel it!! I mean I've tried calling/ emails and texts BUT they want it in writing THROUGH the snail mail! brbrI finally got an envelope and a stamp But I always forget to write a letter and put the 3 together!???brbrIt's $23 a month so I've paid over $800 to these people for nothing!! I even contacted the corporate offices too! brbrI hate this, I'm going to say I'll do it tomorrow, but I'm sure I'll forget! Wish me luck!

I did use my bank app that tells me what bills are coming up between pay day and the next I do make sure I pay most bills a head so if I forgot one pay I okbrThis information explains alot about me and now I know how to help my daughter now 11 when she older who just been diagnosed

Good points the biggest is the high unemployment and even higher underemployment When you make less than someone with the same skills budgeting is tough I also lack motor skills mainly large so I am constantly paying for things many people can do themselves

In Australia we have BPAY which is an automatic bill payment coming out of a bank which is created and controlled by self I have set up for utilities and insurance payments to come out weekly on the day I'm paid It's a form of budgeting

Being alone without friends is a big problem No one wants to help It is impossible to do it on your own Being undiagnosed and not having the resources of a base who understands your needs can destroy your life Having had a family who used abuse on you because it was easy to blame you for all their problems The friends you did have physically used you as a slave getting you to pay for everything after convincing you that they are poor and the problems of the world are your fault Boyfriends all turn out to be physically and emotionally abusive too It is very hard to get the resources to pay for a proper diagnosis so you can avail yourself of the state funded support for people with autism

This hit home so hard! Somehow I've never got into debt or forgotten to pay bills, but forgetting how much I've spend and prioritising what I want right now vs what I need/will want in the future is so difficult My family keeps suggesting I practice investing etc and I have to laugh like, do you realise how difficult it is to get the book 1 page 1 of financial management right? Can't be doing with the stock market 😅brbrClose relatives sometimes say 'how do you have so few savings?' or 'surely you should have more money than that?!' and all I can say is ikr I'm at a loss too!
