Hi I think it’s time to revisit this riff You did it well but not like Mark It’s played in a similar way like neon It’s in the strumming hand, the rhythm of the picking either way, your videos rock even 6 years later 👏🏻 Comment from : @dpschreiner8457 |
I'm not playing it wrong, I am playing it the way I WANT TO Comment from : @stancoleshill8925 |
That ain’t nothin’ - that’s the way you do it! Comment from : @larrypresnall5360 |

Learning the tab for this song is easy, but getting the feel of it is sooooo hard Most of Mark Knopfler songs are like that You can learn them fairly easily, but good luck playing them like him! Comment from : @yfz450rider39 |
Hey Paul,br I perfectly agree with you, but I'd be really fine being able to play it okayish 😂 Thx for that lesson!!! Comment from : @Alteisen_ |
Paul! It’s the first time I see you not nailing something on the guitar! Good job thought! Comment from : @pachudoblas |
Close but no cigar Comment from : @das250250 |
Thank you, Paul A student of mine wants to learn this - and thanks to you, he's going to learn it correctly The TABs/videos I found are ok, but not quite perfect Comment from : @classicalguitar1100 |
4:30 I understood that reference! Comment from : @unreleased882 |
Thanks Paul, I finally managed to understand all that was going on I must admit it was not easy! Comment from : @raygafa3639 |
Still off Comment from : @Arcodaveia |
I think I just got this down Thanks, Paul! Comment from : @herritymusick1758 |
Yes, but Mark just uses his own natural picking technique to make this flow naturally and doesn't need to dissect it Comment from : @mssm9495 |
lol his eyes when the girl in the blue came on Comment from : @vincentcarfagno3752 |
That’s the way you do it! Comment from : @magneto25 |
Because it’s hard af and sorry you don’t have it down 100 Only Knopfler can play it Comment from : @thebmc5969 |
Thank you Comment from : @Compass2101 |
lol! You’re playing it wrong too brbrKnofler played alternating muted notes that you’re missing 😊 and missing the subtle harmonic s Comment from : @pawnwrestler1 |
It’s a banjo riff slowed down Mark early in his life was learning blue grass He was playing the guitar strings similar to a banjo riff that gives it that sound I saw an interview about it and once I heard that I can’t get it out of my head as a big blue grass fan Comment from : @jp4942 |
Paul you are a kick ass guitar player but still didn't get it right I don't think that I have ever heard a guitarist plays money for nothing exactly like Mark Knopfler you are very close to the original masterpiece but not there yet Comment from : @oferabu |
I think the repeated D nots sound different because the first one's a pull off in the second one's picked IMO Just my opinion Comment from : @naMnivraM |
Right hand technique - missing bro not quite there Comment from : @mosheyuval350 |
That’s the way you do it Comment from : @alexcrane9428 |
Hot damn, that was beautiful Comment from : @SirMo |
i clapped but all i got was an Epiphone casino Comment from : @RebelBourke |
All very well, but how did Mark Knopfler learn to play it right? Comment from : @hughwilliams5995 |
Aemond really knows how to play guitar No wonder he charmed Vhagar herself Comment from : @akapilka |
I think it starts with a harmonic note well played sounds great Comment from : @gavinmcdonald9924 |
"I'VE GOT BLISTAS ON ME FINGAS" Comment from : @spec_opsgaming |
i guess we never get close to how this riff is played by Mark he is unique, but inspirational, i just want to achieve the same level of emotion on my guitar playing something like him Comment from : @kismiska99 |
Great one I had alot of fun with this one Comment from : @thejakefromstatefarm6768 |
Is it so important to play something 100 correct? This is not classical music! By the way: I really don't care if the girl in blue doesn't play it correctly Comment from : @Nimzo2005 |
The slightest difference is mark uses his pointer and middle finger in the same motions on different strings Comment from : @EricOptional |
Paul,brI said it before and I think you don't mind me saying it again It is a real pleasure watching your finely crafted videos From educational content, pace, light and sound quality Thank you for sharing Comment from : @LazyPlectrum68 |
I shoulda learned to play the guitarshoulda learned to play them drums Comment from : @Newscannet |
Was talking about this song with my dad yesterday (who isn’t a guitarist), he said it’s proof you don’t need to play complex stuff like eruption to sound good I laughed because this song is way harder than eruption Comment from : @orendamusic7577 |
I mean, it's a fine riff, but Comment from : @petermgruhn |
I've been practicing so hard but I still can't get it right, been at it for several months I suppose my biggest problem is that I don't have a guitar Comment from : @rooh5825 |
To sum, Mark is playing that open D as a "sloppy" playing to illustrate "that ain't working!" Comment from : @insider_english1594 |
ITS BANJO PICKING TECH Comment from : @sheldonartforms |
This is the way Comment from : @carstenfolsch5100 |
imo it doesn't matter how exactly you play it, as long as it sounds good It's all about your interpretation of the song i guess Comment from : @nathanricetalks |
And if with the key at middle and low tone, sounds more confused, like Knopfler? But thanks a lot Comment from : @JosePereira-oy6sj |
Do you also know how to install microwaves? Comment from : @fasgamboa |
I agree what you said in the end Learn from the original Yes, sure, make it your own, but perhaps start at the original and all it's subtleties Besides, that's what made these riffs timeless and the composers the legends that they are Comment from : @andre65971 |
Try sing and play it there Paul Comment from : @donalcolohan6939 |
It sounds uhhh relly good! Comment from : @slimtimm1 |
Did NOT work :/ Comment from : @JohnnyJ4 |
3:05 Thought about doing it but was afraid my 6120 Brian Setzer smoke could disappear 😅 Comment from : @josuanachname1914 |
Nice aproach Paul, but still missing a fundamental, the fingerpicking downstroke with thumb and middle finger I mean, if you practice im sure you'll get it The best tutorial I've seen is from a guy called "Pavel Fomenkov" with an acoustic guitar Comment from : @joaquincastellvi7295 |
Totally agree that learning and progression comes from replicating exactly from the masters You can relearn some songs for 20 years before getting them right This is one if those songs Comment from : @jackd7981 |
Learning to play like Mark Knopfler on the guitar is like learning to play like Jeff Porcaro on the drums -- b*LOTS*/b of subtleties that bmake/b the song what it is Go play the Rosanna Shuffle without the ghost strokes like Porcaro does -- it's just not bright!/b Same with these subtle notes that Knopfler plays in this song -- it's just not bright/b without them Excellent video! Thanks! Comment from : @LMacNeill |
It's called doing it justice, and you did Comment from : @markattila9835 |
Man, let me say as a guitar player of 20 years…you’re a great teacher Nailed the riffs etc and understood the harmonic subtleties of the song Great work 👍 Comment from : @OzzyCorgiFox |
The feel of this riff only really comes together when you realise that almost all MK’s rhythmic figures have the same right hand pattern throughout: down thumb, up fingers, down fingers (flailing stroke), up fingers Some of these strokes will be silent, some on muted notes, but the pattern stays consistent Comment from : @confounder |
very ironic this video also plays it wrong lol (i love paul but it's the truth) Comment from : @reverend481 |
Great video and indeed the detail awesome as usual ! But what the heck on 4:30 "Chinese food???? " Comment from : @basoud9096 |

Johnny Marr playing "Ask" is an excellent example of the same kind of Knopfler level dynamism Comment from : @JetJockey87 |
Paul, have you seen the video of Knopfler showing how he plays it? His right hand rhythm is way different than what anyone does If you’ve updated this video I apologize Comment from : @MullyShaves |
Being of a more philosophical mindset, what the focus on this riff triggers in me is the question of WHY certain sounds sort of ring our bell Why this set of notes played in a certain way but not this other set of notes played in some other way Is there some physical "thing" in our brain matter brMoreover, in the visual world (as opposed to the audible) why does a sailboat have beauty, but not a tugboat? why blue sky, but not gray? why an Arabian horse, but not a mule? why a Corvette, but not Volkswagen? why a certain physical appearance of a women, but not some other one? You can go on and on like this Is it something in our brains? or is it something we've learned? Is it something organic (as in our brain matter) or is it something spiritual? Comment from : @johnritter5951 |
Thanks Paul Comment from : @danielhall3105 |

no Comment from : @qv81 |
The devil is in the details Comment from : @PatBackus |
Hello Paul, I consider you an excellent musician, excellent guitarist, and I follow your videos, however you are not playing the riff 100 well either Mark uses his middle and index fingers, up and down, alternating with his thumb, which causes a different expression, although you have the correct notes Comment from : @MrAlfredoSoares |
Hi Paul Thanks, that was great Can you do Ramble On So tricky to get the strumming pattern correct Comment from : @andymorris5034 |
I definitely have to learn this "I need a les Paul" trick Comment from : @bloos4156 |
