The South and Lee knew that they couldn’t win, unless they got France and Britain, whose governments preferred southern independence, to intervene The Russian czar didn’t want Britain, which surrounded Russia in India and Western Canada to grow even stronger, sent his fleets to New York and San Francisco and threatened war if France or Britain got involved And Lincoln ended slavery, which made British military support for the south politically impossible

Wow, this is, by far, the greatest explanation of the Gettysburg campaign I've ever seen/heard (even after having read multiple books on the subject) The presentation fills in many of the gaps in my knowledge, especially about Lee's strategic mindset at the time Brilliant stuff! Thank you Mr Knott!

Fantastic Thank you I've armchair studied the American Civil War my entire life and have never gotten the answer to "why" Lee continually attacked an above-average defensive position and didn't alter his plan (particularly on Day 3) I could never understand WHY he ignored Longstreet and all these battle-hardened vetarans that knew what they were doing and were very capable of reading a battlefield

The War was not only won by attrition, but when Grant via "Sherman's March to the Sea," took the war to the (Southern People), It was the 19th Century equivalent of dropping the two Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki! Defeat the people, to win the war! You don't defeat an enemy by winning battles upon the battlefield! We lost Vietnam, because we were never prepared to wipe out the countries that were the true antecedent causes of the conflict! Had it not been for "Sherman's March, " the war would have somehow continued! Possibly?

I think Jeb Stuart was just as much to blame as anybody for the southern loss at Gettysburg!brbrI think Buford literally won that battle for them north just by choosing the ground! He set them up! This is the first main battle without Stonewall Jackson and although AP Hill was capable, it was his first campaign as Corp commanderbrbrSo all these little things interpersonal relationships, loss of your greatest Lieutenant, your other lieutenants, not really being completely aware of what your goal is although I think Longstreet was brbrI think the guy that gets little acclaim is Longstreet Not specifically for this battle, but for helping maintain his army for as long as he did Longstreet was more defensive commander and I think he really agreed with the philosophy You’ve got to have good ground I’m not basing this on anything but books that I readbrbrI wonder how many people realize this but the only southern general and major commander in the confederate army that does not or did not have a monument erected for him was James Longstreet! James Longstreet was a Republican Prior to the war one of his best friends was Sam Grant! And after the war, he politic for US grant as president! I don’t think the South ever forgave him for that and for losing the war! I think there was a lot of bias against James Longstreet On that day just before the battle the second day, the south should’ve redeployed they had general Meade by the short hair! All they had to do was force him into a confrontation in the land of their choosing and they would be the confederate states of America today That’s my opinion and I could be wrong but the funny thing is I’m a Yankee lol brbrLee should never fought on that ground was totally blind that should’ve been his first indication to redeploy! Pickett lost 15,000 men on the third day or thereabouts For a charge over open land! The day before they tried to take the heights Only they had a chance was day one! They could’ve overrun Buford and forced Anderson into taking defensive position outside of Gettysburg and not on the Heights! But Lee didn’t know because he couldn’t see JEB Stuart lost the South battle at Gettysburg and ultimately the war because of it! The South never regained their strength and they had to play a defensive campaign and hit and run type of war in between attacks thanks to very aggressive Robert E Lee! brbrThanks for the program! It was fun to watch and speculate!

Stuart would not have been able to pull this stunt if US Grant were his commander Grant issued written orders which allowed no wiggle room for the recipient Lee often issued verbal orders which were perfect for Stonewall Jackson who thought the same way as him But Jeb was not as single minded and liked to show off while also trying to win battles Lee was unlucky to lose Jackson, but he failed to adjust his command style to command his army without Jackson
