When James Cameron said it needed to be 3rd or 4th highest grossing of all time that was 10 years ago when he was pitching the movies to Fox Thats why he said in that interview that "he told the studio" he wasnt telling the interviewer that He also recently said that right now it probably needs to come around 10th, which lines up with top 5 from ten years ago and also lines up with the projected 400-450 million production budget and 200 million dollar marketing budget So it needs 14-15 billion dollars depending on domestic/international split

If they load all of the upfront costs for the Avatar series onto The Way of Water, does this imply that they expect the box office to drop for each succeeding film? It would be reasonable to expect some franchise fatigue after one or two sequels Cameron will need to up his game in terms of stories and characters (and maintain a high standard of CGI) if he wants to keep the audience engaged all the way through to Avatar 5
