As an Air Force firefighter, I worked a straight 24 on/24 off You were assigned a Kelly day which could be any day, Sunday through Saturday There were no options to work your K-day, you must be off that day, including the civilians The idea was to keep you from working more than 72 hours per week However if your K-day was Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, the following week was a Sun/Tues/Thurs/Sat in which you wound up working 96 hours that week It didn’t matter to me as it was just another Fine Air Force Day Comment from : @sjp35productions6 |
We work the following schedule:brTuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Mondaybr3 days off brFriday, Sundaybr2 days off brWednesdaybr5 days off brand it starts over again brit's basically a 21 day cycle we still work 240 hours a month but it's 10 twenty four hour shifts Comment from : @rogermyers4884 |
Thank you for posting this stuff You’re content is inspiring me to change my career and start an EMT program Comment from : @kthnxbi8834 |
You didn't cover the schedule that a lot of departments here in Canada follow 4 Platoons work 24hr shifts - usually 7am to 7am In a 4 week cycle you work one of each day of the week ie you work one Sunday, one Monday, one Tuesday etc every month If you work Sunday you'll work Wednesday If you work Monday you'll work Thursday If you work Friday you'll work Sunday and if you work Tuesday that's it for the week The cycle repeats every 4 weeks Comment from : @spikerunner |
I’d sell my soul to satan to get into the fire department for one of those schedules I hate Monday to Friday 9-5s Comment from : @geebee6010 |
Love the videos, thank you! Comment from : @KB-bm9tr |
This is very generalized Most departments in the northeast work a 42 hour workweek with 4 platoons My schedule for example, is 24on/24off/24on/5 days off Comment from : @Englewood_guy |
Love for you to explain in more detail FLSA- OT Comment from : @aaroneaster6154 |
One thing I like about the firefighter work schedule is I can have a definite answer to when I'll be home The 2 jobs I have right now, concrete and snow plowing, doesn't allow for that So while it's a weird work schedule to most, to me it's a lot more structured Thanks for the videos, I am a new volunteer, considering going full time after I get my training done, and have some calls under my belt to know for sure that's what I wanna do Comment from : @Deerhunterjs |
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the fire service based off a 56 hour work week because of exemption laws? Comment from : @bettercurbappeal |
So I do plan on becoming a firefighter shortly after highschool, is the yearly pay rate the same for each schedule? Comment from : @StormGuard12 |
You left off FLSA Work cycle To determine if the Firefighter is untitled to overtime If they choice a 28 day cycle you only get overtime after working 212 hours in the 28 daysbrThe Kelly day can be used to reduce the over time the department pays outbrbrAnd also 48/96 is becoming way more popular I have worked all 3 shifts you talked aboutbrbrThere also are departments that have 4 shift's or work 10 and 14 hours shift in rotation Comment from : @j81870 |
Now try explaining the 25 day FDNY chart 😂🤯😂 Comment from : @dc1235 |
In my country we work 24hours shift and we have three days off Monday 24/h, T,W,TH off, Friday 24, Sa, Sun, Monday off Comment from : @ernestasmikuta5207 |
Question: are firefighters allowed to rest on shifts if time allows? Or is it an “you’re on the clock, so work” type situation? Comment from : @EGray1401 |
Damm that’s a destroyed American 🇺🇸 flag Comment from : @bladez4200 |
Would've been great if you included 24/72 since it's the norm here in the northeast Comment from : @jonathanguarnizo1766 |
So it’s possible to be a correctional officer and a firefighter I want that life Comment from : @damikey85 |
When I went career (in 1979) we were on a 56 on 112 off, with 3 hours off during the shift This was an attempt to comply with FLSA We loved that shift Every 3 months the shifts would rotate around and one shift would have 9 days off with pay I'll agree that the FF schedule is something that the average civilian can't really graspbut it is the most flexible schedule(s) you can haveand it is the best job on the planet Comment from : @kelly806 |
This is misleading I’m on 24/48s and I haven’t been home for 7 days lol Comment from : @nc818 |

Do you have a family? I’ve been wanting to get into this since talking to a buddy of mine who did it for 26 years and have that camaraderie like in the army but I got out of the army because I was always leaving for training and even missed my daughter birth overseas I want to get into this job because most people i talk to love it But how’s the life with your family? Do you bring them to the station or how do you or many others handle that aspect? Comment from : @Moistyr1 |
Is there any way to be able to take Sunday’s off? Comment from : @yidyb2862 |
So what happens to the rotation when there is a big out of control vegetation forest fire that last lets say 6weeks Here in CA I believe they go on 24on24off does the pay change as in OT, or are some hours and days go towards PTO/vacation/ Comment from : @siwhatscrackn |
Sorry you chose a profession that doesn’t pay well enough Comment from : @PressHBCA |
Your math on the overtime is way off It is way more complicated You have to be paid overtime due to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) 7K exemption when you work over 53hrs in a week That being said it's still not that simple because your department can set the overtime pay period from 7-28 days, and they don't have to be in 7 day increments There are way to many variables to catch everything about overtime and Kelly Days within 7 mins to simplify it if you work the 10 shifts a month which most schedules will have you work that would be 1213 days a year, multiply that by 24hrs and that will give you 2920hrs in a year FLSA allows for 53hrs a week before overtime or comp if you have that option are awarded and that is 2756hrs which is a difference of 164hrs annually divided by 12 its about 14hrs of OT a month built in I appreciate the breakdown but I also want to know what do you do about mandatory overtime on your California Swing schedule?
