For 2-3 summers I got to hang with some connected guys They were all decent guys, honest, and never looked for a fight If someone said something though to them first, open season I had a couple black eyes and bloodied lips that summer, hard to fight trashed We used to go on their boats fishing, they’d buy enough liquor for a trans-Atlantic crossing They’d also bring a bushel of crabs on the boat I’d say 2/3 of them always had plenty of extra cash and picked up the tab if they had it They expected me to offer to kick in money, but refused to allow me to pay I always carried the gear and booze That was expected of me and I did it gladly They respected that I did not try to act like one of them, stayed classy, and treated them with respect They are like Dennis Rodmans, or Bill Lambeer, or Pac-Man Joneses, love them as teammates, hate them as unknowns

I've worked in the kitchen of a couple of organized crime restaurants They didn't say anything about anything to the white cooks Their crimes were avoiding taxes, falsifying documentation, putting lousy liquor in nice bottles, and doing a lot of business as trading with their friends (but i guess bartering is legal) They also ripped off their employees hours and paycheques I have no respect for these people
