I’ve been teaching Maths for 30 years in average comps and love it ! I’m an ex cop and builder and know what thankless jobs really look like……here’s my top tips for longevity in the job:br Assume incompetence from colleagues and especially SLT, otherwise you’re sure to be disappointed!br Don’t try to ‘tick all the boxes’, concentrate on delivering quality lessons Do the bare minimum to tick the non-essential boxes, just enough to stay out of trouble…br Find a colleague you can emulate, copy their technique, why do we always try to reinvent the wheel in education! You’ll also learn tons from poor colleagues re how NOT to do it……br Stand at the front of the classroom and actually teach from the board, I find kids love it, they’re bored of power points and yet more worksheets…br Validate yourself on results, not popularity, it’s THE classic young teacher failing…brStand tall and own your classroom, they ain’t your mates, eye contact, humour and confidence will carry you through…brbrSearch ‘Johnny mathematics’ if youd like to put a face to the comment X

I really appreciate this TED Talk I have had several students over my teaching career tell me that I am like a mother, or at least an older sister/aunt, to them I find that it is so important to show them that you love each of them and care about their academic success, yes, but more importantly, their personal success This was a great video!

In my pathetic state they are making it easier to be a teacher Those who are experts in their field (but have no teaching background) are trying to become teachers Nowadays all they essentially need to do is take a content test This is of major concern to me because many of them will have no idea what they are getting themselves into Those people I have noticed don't last long in education for just that reasonthey'd never been around kids and may have thought teaching would be easier than whatever they were doing I am a Chemistry teacher and will be teaching AP Chemistry in the future Believe me, I intend to do everything I possibly can to make sure those who take the class earn college credit However, if they were to forget everything after high school, but still saw me as I caring person who works well with kids, or stayed in touch with me because we formed such a great bond, I guess that means more to me
