Encore une excellente analyse Vous avez été décoré de l'ordre du Mérite et, de part à vos analyses très justes (comme celles sur Foch ou Castex), vous méritez la Légion d'honneur Comment from : @fredericchauveau9889 |

I read a lot about how the French managed to build their colonies in America during the XVIIIth century, with a fraction of the people compared to the English colonies, with a heavy reliance on alliances with the local nations It seems to be a sort of iligne conductrice/i through out French history Comment from : @lesfreresdelaquote1176 |

“French touch” means the French “marry” the local women, while the Brits and Yanks do not Comment from : @peter_in_alaska |

fuck you for the spoiler, i am still gonna watch the movie 😅 Comment from : @rolanddlr1583 |

Another cracker! Have you read A Bright Shining Lie about John Paul Vann in Vietnam? Vann's view, after hard experience with ARVN forces, was that the Us could only win if it took a colonial approach - effectively taking over from the host govt and running everything themselves Your video has made me wonder - has there every been a successful COIN campaign in this non-colonial mould? I can't think of one, but would be interested to be proved wrong Comment from : @RupertMarsh |

Cold war COIN : a la Indochine - "With a gun in one hand, and a guitar in the other" Didn't work against Uncle Ho Comment from : @johnteets2921 |

I thought it was telling that the building of protective villages like in Vietnam and Rhodesia never again were tried I know even those ultimately failed although we're an obvious "first" choice in coin warfare in a rural environment Comment from : @friscostreetstories5403 |

Thank you for the videos Michael, I find them to be immensely intellectually stimulating If you are looking for video topic suggestions, I think a video going over the development and employment of Russian military doctrine (particularly with regards to the Ukraine war) would be fascinating, others may also enjoy it Thanks again for all of your efforts Comment from : @logansowers1674 |

Abosulutely love your website As a former combat Marine of the Vietnam War, 1968-69 this particular episode is is of special note The Marines developed their version of COIN early in the war Send a junior NCO, out into a small hamlet or village along with a Marine of lower rank Once ensconced in the hamlet they would try and raise a local militia to defend the village against the local VC brThe results were mixed at best In the end the population knew that you eventually leave and go home, leaving them to the mercy of the Vietcong Not a good situation for those that cooperated with the AmericansbrAs for the French Algerian War, the French Army clearly won militarily The Challe Plan was brilliant in it’s concept and execution At no time in the war did the FLN outnumber the Harkis fighting with the French forcesbrThe French forces were led veteran group of French officers who had digested much of their experience’s in Indo-China In 2006 I had the pleasure to meet the legendary General Marcel Bigeard, who commanded the 3rd Marine Parachute Regiment in Algeria and the 6th Colonial Parachute Battalion in Vietnam brI have studied the First Indochina War and the Algerian War for the twenty years last years Many lessons to be learned from those two wars Comment from : @johnciummo3299 |

41:19 the colonial context could be more associated with regime change or occupation rather than assisting a national government with COIN Comment from : @michaelmulligan0 |

Importantly until relatively recently it was illegal for any French army personnel to serve overseas with the exception of the French Foreign Legion Comment from : @michaelmulligan0 |

The difference in force is that the French logistical tail isn’t as complex, few type of different vehicles, vehicles that don’t necessarily have to be world beating but are deemed good enough and they don’t have to bring Pizza Hut with them brbrOn languages, French is the 5th most widely spoken language in the world and traditional French really only acts in Francophone countries Comment from : @michaelmulligan0 |

Michael, I've been binge watching your videos, thank you for sharing all of your insights I would be curious to see an analysis of Operation Sentinel, explaining strategic goals and the limitations it imposes on the French military acting abroad I know RAND published on this topic a couple of years ago Comment from : @jeor1450 |
|
|
Very clear analysis and I think important work The fact that the French have lost contact with original strategies is clear and understandable I think that the British have similar critics of American Force protection and believe that they have superior soft-skills based on their time in Malaysia They tried to implement this crudely in Iraq with disastrous results I think lesser forces always have to convince themselves that they have something to contribute and it seems fair to assert that the inability to dominate militarily will naturally lead to the exploration of other methods The main contradiction seems to be that you cannot effectively influence the society that you are in without committing to really penetrate the social and political spheres This is a massive commitment and the level of integration seems to presuppose colonialism Comment from : @bewellgarforth2611 |

Portugal's counter insurgency wars in Africa are really interestingn as they fought 3 simultaneous COINs, while being one of the smallest and poorest European countries with far less resources than even France has Comment from : @jgw9990 |

The French were decisively defeated in Indochina though? Comment from : @jgw9990 |

Interesting As someone who has studied Indochina and Algeria intensely 25 years ago; I had not thought the French would be "Americanised" Comment from : @PalleRasmussen |
|
|
I am relatively ignorant of the theoretical underpinnings of counterinsurgency operations but in my lifetime I have witnessed several and participated in one, Vietnam 68-69, though at a very basic 11B level I can’t recall a successful counterinsurgency intervention Perhaps the Australian intervention in East Timor would qualify though it was on such a small scale The First Gulf War was successful but that is not really counterinsurgency that was a limited combined arms prosecution of a conventional ground war much like the Falkland’s War The British and Australians always claim the Malayan Emergency was a successful counterinsurgency operation though Malaya was still a British colony at the time and most of the communist insurgents were ethnic Chinese who were easily differentiated from the local Malay population and did not have their supportbr I guess my question is, ‘Does someone have a successful COIN doctrine that can be translated into repeatable operation successes?” Comment from : @Chiller11 |
|
|
Hi,brI listened to your analysis about the American intervention in Afghanistan (a video that was as interesting as all the other ones from your channel I've seen so far), and it's interesting to hear your comment at roughly 41:12 about the global approach not being relevant in a post-colonial context, but in the other video you were saying that what have might have been missing in the American approach of the Afghan situation was a complete implication in the political field, which I understand is fairly close to a global approach ? Comment from : @Bloodersk |

19:09 you might be very interested by the episode 05 on the YouTube channel « Vétérans de France », it is the interview of Pierre Flamen Who fought in Indochina and led patrols of indigenous combatants (militia) to fight counter-insurgency in the mountainous jungles of Indochina as a young 20 something young man He also fought in Dien Bien Phu brHe is now 90 or more (at least at the time of interviewing, I hope he is still amongst us) and this interview is a real treasure, filled with pictures and really passionatingbrbrIt is in French, but you can enable auto subtitles in English in the settings of the video Comment from : @brunol-p_g8800 |

Thank you for this detailed look I especially appreciated how you highlighted the COIN doctrine's origination from the context of colonial era policies and its flaws in being applied toward modern insurgencies Given your description of the new French doctrine for insurgencies, it really sounded more akin to the concept of foreign internal defense Should any distinctions even be drawn between the two? Or perhaps the better question is whether the classic concepts of counter-insurgency in a colonial setting like the Malayan emergency or Indochina war remain applicable for western countries given modern political requirement? Comment from : @syjiang |

My uncle served in Indochina, for several tours ( colonial troops), for several tours in the 30's and in the 50' He ended up signing the Evian Accords in 1954 for France brYou are absolutely right, time in country, gave them deep insight into who they were fighting and the lay of the landbrIn his memoirs, he recollects with sadness how the US commanders dismissed his offer to help It Could have been a game changer for this region Comment from : @thibautmallet1194 |

Very intersting ! Thank you very much for sharing your analyses and all these references Besides, i really like the way you approach things, rather neutral and open minded while keeping a critical view Thanks again for sharing that, and i wish you the best Comment from : @lesvideosduperepoupi9809 |

At one point this is just cultural warfare Send movies instead of soliders I hate the idea of an army used to please and seduce the enemy, because a real war happens(well it should) when there are no possible compromises Comment from : @AthanasedeLaClape |
|
|
jeez it's no wonder the Algerians hate and resisted the French to call them insurgents is insulting, you should be ashamed of yourself, they were people who were being massacred in incredibly cruel ways and tried to stop the psycopaths who were trying to kill them allbrbrwould you call Jews who fought against the Nazis "insurgents"??? or resistance Comment from : @CastleHassall |
|
|
Today, we learned that an insurgent had been killer in new Caledonia 11 lost their lives since the begining of the riots It made 15 seconds in the news on TVimagine the same in continental France We are still very much plagued with colonial mentality 😢 Comment from : @danielalala-s6i |
|

Thank you for your work Still it's the first time that I hear that de Gaulle favoured Algeria's independence because he didn't want Algerian members of parliament Are you sure about this ? Comment from : @jeanmarieboucherit7376 |

|
The problem with our new (2013) doctrine is that it is composed mostly of wishful thinking in the parts about leaving decisive action to the host gov Tragically this is the only way forward in the 21st century political environment Comment from : @TheRaph290 |

|
Another excellent video Very clear "synthèse" And thanks for the bibliography, that is much appreciated Comment from : @Nenikikamen13 |

Not a single mention to ELF, or American multinationals? How can you talk about colonialism, or devise a policy or doctrine without acknowledging the role of corporations Its the whole point of colonialism, allowing access to cheap resources and keeping markets closed to dump products from the metropolisbrbr Its all about the exploitation of resources and locals, and any doctrine needs to provide an answer to that, which they never did, except through blatant lies Comment from : @josearaujo8616 |
|

Listening to you confirmed what I thought Communism in Africa has been replaced by panafricanism, the same scam, comes from the same place The only question is how long will it take for africans stop falling for this trap Comment from : @astralechat5994 |

Mali and the rest are collapsing since they "kicked" the french out Comment from : @astralechat5994 |

I guess that Champlain in Canada and Dupleix in India are behind this reputation that the French have an easier time with the local populations Comment from : @tremendousbaguette9680 |

I thought this was about counter-insurgency But why is he giving examples of how the French colonized Mali?? Is it the same thing?? Comment from : @bekisiphotshili2566 |

Thanks for this, its great to hear the Francophone perspective i had no idea the Americans borrowed so much Its never a happy story though is it? Comment from : @Whalebone66 |

should have used british counter insurgency as it worked in malaya Comment from : @redjacc7581 |
|
|
The issue wasn't counter insurgency so much as the eternal inability for lots of African countries to establish sovereign states recognized by all ethnicities within What France used to do to deal with this problem with puppet governements and give them carte blancheIn this case they didn't Sad truth is lot of Africans were objectively better off under colonial rule (French Daomey is the most glaring example) but it's simply to politically incorect to recognize that Comment from : @redwithblackstripes |

Bugaud was a butcher He crushed the Algerian as he did when he commanded in the vendee with terror, brutality and murder Comment from : @sarrumac |
