Im been practicing focal lenght photography on my zoom lensesand intend to move on to prime lenses soon, and I think this video gives a street straight insights that is better than theorotical rhetoric so its great but why does your voice shiver that much! you are talking the entire lenght of the video in a shiver! Comment from : @Musicianrider |
2 years later, and I'm thinking, huh I kept my 35mm f 14 on 14 and that's it Wow Comment from : @ChrisBrogan |
Thank you for the great video The message I got was: Primes force you to be creative and become a better photographer Comment from : @paulfiorino7463 |
I ditched them for pro fast zoom nikons , primes ARENT a progression ! Dont mislead people Comment from : @joekelly9369 |
The lengths y'all go to to avoid bringing your kit zoom! ;) I feel like a standard zoom is the way to go in most scenarios! Comment from : @benignfungi |
Great video! but in the f8 image, you cut off his head So Comment from : @raytbrown2 |
I disagree a lot of things you bring to the public But hey just keep on telling what you want Just one thing I will mention Bring a 35-150 and keep your photography mind active It will give you much more than running around with primes I know, I'm a photographer Comment from : @hansdegebruiker1968 |
13:00 "I was treating these three primes as one awkward, convoluted zoom lens which had to be changed every 10 seconds" Ah man, been there and done that Great advice on just committing to one lens and getting what you can with it rather than just taking everything for every composition possible Comment from : @70kgjujitsu |
The way to not get kicked out by security is to ask permission Comment from : @lidge1994 |

11:25 pray and spray Not shocked Comment from : @n1ngnuo |
I carry two cameras full frame I will typically take three lenses with me, 17-35mm f/28, 28-70mm f/28, and 80-200mm f/28 I am photojournalist so that is my walk about kit Comment from : @ralphberrett8485 |
I never had a zoom lens until 2009 -10 Comment from : @413TomaccoRoad |
Henri Cartier Bresson shot almost exclusively with 50mm Comment from : @413TomaccoRoad |

I use primes for low light, low weight, or low depth of field is a requirementbrBut zoom lenses are so good now, the Sony 20-70 F4 covers the standard range exceptionally well and isn't particularly heavy, that I don't really switch it out often for daytime shooting I'm looking at the tamron 70-180 28 G1 as a Tele zoom lens that will leave me with little left to want for Comment from : @philipk4475 |
Meh Modern top-end zooms are just as sharp and infinitely more versatile "Move around, get closer" is the easiest advice in the world to give but not always possible Events, landscape, real estate, wildlife etcbrbrWill use primes when I need f/14 Will still have a zoom lens or 2 in the Pelican case Comment from : @jimathanasopoulos2234 |
good tips jut bought a 14 50mm Nikon lens was thinking wide open all the time ! LOL Comment from : @esotericist |
I'm sorry, but that is misinformation Most lenses are at their sharpest between f28 and f56 I guarantee that lens sharpness is worse at f8 and seriously degrades at f11 For reference read about 'lens diffraction' Comment from : @mariusuldukis1566 |
Prime kit (full frame): 24-50-100 (or 135) Aperture glued to 56/8 unless shallow DOF is crucial for the image The 50 is on the camera be default The 24 comes out when I need foreground in the shot, shooting in tight spaces, or need to include architecture/background or groups into the frame for scale or context The 100 comes out for portraits, reaching a composition I can't by moving my feet with the 50, and for compressing foreground and backgroundbrIf I'm shooting a fast-moving event like a parade or protest, I use two bodies with the 24 and 50 on the bodies and the 100 in the waist bag Comment from : @ABC-sc2ip |
Do you use full frame, or crop sensor??? Comment from : @venturaVlogger |
At weddings I only use the 35 mm f14, 85 mm f14 and sometimes a 100 mm f28 macro I don't want to carry a heavy 70-200 mm f28 all day Comment from : @wanneske1969 |
The f2, the bloke in the foreground is a distraction He's way out of focus, so in my mind, I shouldn't be noticing him so much, he's not the subject, but he takes up so much of the frame, I'm asking myself why he's there The f8 is far better composed and still would have looked alright a bit more open but because they're a little in focus, they act as a supporting act for the subject of the bridge They are keenly watching it and it draws the viewer into the what they are looking at But they can't be too soft or they lose their purpose in the image Nicely explained Comment from : @framedman |
I take one prime out and my Sony RX100 VII in my pocket (24-200mm compact camera)brbrThis has been by far the best combo I've ever experienced Comment from : @duvalpenny100 |
I just know whatever approach I take I wish I had done the other When I just have 1 or 2 primes, I wish I had the superzoom When I am with the superzoom, I'm spending all day shooting at just 1 or 2 focal lengths and I think I should have just put the prime on and left it at that Comment from : @jeffreybeigie5244 |
Very helpful video - many thanks I'll try to unglue my 50mm prime from wide open on my next trip! Comment from : @robertavery8002 |
I thought your conclusion would gonna be "take a zoom lens when you are traveling instead of a lot of primes" Comment from : @CassioHungria85 |
Dude, late your channel Learning tons of practical, useful info Comment from : @jplum7708 |
Soo interresting Thank You for sharing Greetings from Belgium :) Comment from : @MarcLerchs |
I've been using my 16-55mm f28 very happily all summer With the dark evenings moving in, a faster 33mm f14 is about to arrive Time will tell if I'll lug my heavy 16-55mm around as a backup, as I reckon I'll feel naked just having the one focal distance available But I'm hoping I won't Comment from : @mikefoster6018 |
I like the cropping of the f2 but I prefer f8 :/ Comment from : @johannesnoordermeer |
Great video, Roman You're a great teacher Comment from : @BlancGivre |
I walk with 3 primes 24, 50, 85 I carry it ina sling Whether its edc or travel it works for me Comment from : @Roysphotos8 |
Very helpful thanksss Comment from : @thanhngale5060 |
Very good advice at the end in regards to switching up lenses constantly I find I’m able to be more creative and less distracted when I’m sticking to one focal length or range, and learning to be okay with that allows me to see better compositions Great work as always, keep it up!! 🙌🏻🤙🏻 Comment from : @vaughnharp06 |
Great video Roman Comment from : @alexc6784 |
Whenever I’m traveling to a new place I take two primes For my Fuji gear (only the X-E4 nowadays) it’s my 23 and 50 (f2) 85 will be with the 23 The 50 is in my pocket Comment from : @jacobh5817 |
Interesting video Why not eliminating the problem by just bringing the 16-55 28? I get primes are a bit faster but… curiously yours, Paul Keep up the amazing videos!!! Thanks so much Comment from : @paulgreenstone |
I've always gone out with 1 prime lens on my xh1, 35mm f14, or my 80mm f28 macrobrMy xt1 is for vintage lenses Comment from : @Ilegalmoveman |
You're right Back when I started I had the Canon 50mm f12 L, I shot everything at f12brThe wise old me now looks back at that kid and laughs Comment from : @7LiquidSnake |
Regarding your comment in the video, I took two pictures of my aunt My mother also appeared in the image in the foreground much closer to me when compared to my aunt The picture at a lower aperture value looked worse when compared to the picture at a higher aperture value as my mother was too blurred out in the image taken at lower aperture value It seems that there is still a desire for the viewer to at least understand the foreground element which requires it being not as blurred out as much Additionally, discrete large jumps in blurriness between the elements in the image are not as pleasing to the viewer IMO Comment from : @gerald1964 |
The bridge F8 like you said looks better, 50mm prime or 35mm is my light kit carry If I only could take one it would be the 50mm, I do have a zoom 15-45mm but would probably never just take it with no other lens Comment from : @AntonyBall-h9g |
EyE do the same thing When I go out street shooting, I do so with one body/one lens I may go out through the same territories with a different prime some other day to see what EyE might see in a differ rent weigh, but I only put one into play per day Comment from : @raymeedc |
Thanks! Comment from : @fernandoroque1547 |
Great teaching style I specially liked the aperture advice and the example illustrated the idea clearly Comment from : @arp4674 |
14:00 After listening and reading advice in regards to carrying gear, I believe the choice of a 23, a 35 and a 50 is both too bulky and too narrowbrSay, we carry more than 1 lens so that we can have focal lengths that provide different perspectivesbrYet, in a world that begins at 10/15 and ends at 800, the 23-35-50 spread is quite limited If those are your only options, leaving the 35 at the hotel might provide better resultsbrOr maybe carry the 35 you specialize in and a telefoto so that whatever pictures you take indeed exploit the different focal lengths without being a couple steps or a small crop away from each other Comment from : @SerMon22 |
I find weird yo to talk about the “realistic” look Photography have nerver been realistic, or it have never been responsive to t’he truth Comment from : @rubenjaramillo9458 |
16mm, 24mm, 35mm, and a 90 is what I wanna end up with Comment from : @PancakeDiaries |
Damn Glad I found this I have two lenses A 24mm 28 and a 28-60mm kit 35-56, I believe I grabbed a mist filter, ND and a polarizer for the kit, and 😩😩😩😩 only an ND for my 24mm I think I'm gonna keep the 24 on, and practice with it until I grab a 35mm 14, which is the length I love to shoot at Comment from : @PancakeDiaries |
OTOH my Helios 44 and Meyer Optik Oreston 50mm only do their thing at wide open brWhen I'm using my Fuji and Takumar lenses I do use the full range of iris brThe difference is that the latter lenses have less hard sided or more blades And they don't have idiosyncratic optical behavior like the Helios and OrestonbrAs far as the F2 vs F8 images you present, the F2 image is very awkward in terms of the bridge angle The F8 is more pleasing since it occupies more of the frame and shows more of the bridge Not a good comparison Comment from : @NullStaticVoid |
Great video as always, love your content and presentation style Agree with you on the choice of the 2 photos, Im using a Nikkor 35mm 18G, which is new and I love, I find F56 to generally be the best for urban city photos Comment from : @kevanalbrighton5887 |
I totally agree about not using the lens only wide open But you mentioned the argument of the image looking more natural, more like you would see the scene in person I don't think striving for realism is always a good thing Stylized and "larger than life" photos are often more effective Comment from : @lukastemberger |
I shoot at f/16 90 of the time lol Comment from : @johnbullock8885 |
I completely disagree about the bridge photos With the stopped-down photo it's not clear what the subject is Is it the bridge, or the people looking at the bridge? Opening up to isolate your subject makes the difference between a professional-looking photograph and an amateur-looking snapshot Comment from : @seikibrian8641 |
I really liked the f2 photo of the bridge photo haha 🤣 It made me ponder Comment from : @briannorwick |
I just started of with an xe4 and the 27mm prime lense it comes with So I might end up getting to close once I get a zoom lense haha Comment from : @jothamdaledejesus2708 |
You’ve removed the eyepiece just like I did for my xt5… nice 👍 it makes it easier Comment from : @ray0fh0pe |
Beginner here and this advice was MUCH appreciated!!! Comment from : @treharris1677 |
How sensible! I'm taking the suggestions to heart Comment from : @thejohnringo |
My Sony APS-C has Clear Image Zoom, and other manufactures must also have some kind of digital zoom as well So if the prime lens I chose for the day doesn't reach far enough, I simply activate the variable "zoom" function to get the focal length I need ( up to 2x) It always puzzles me that this feature is rarely mentioned in discusions about focal lenghts and prime lenses Comment from : @toomanyhobbies400 |
I appreciate all the topics you covered in this video Especially felt the same way when contemplating which prime to take with me I prefer going light and hate hauling around more than I need I also have a dilemma about whether to take the lens hood or to go go without Would like to hear your thoughts Cheers Comment from : @namkyukimpark |
Sweet spot of modern prime lenses often is not f/11 but f/4-f/56, in micro 4/3 f/28-4 Comment from : @jacuswoczega9180 |
Just start with a 35mm lens and you won't need any other lens for a loooong time Comment from : @gainde1137 |
Totally agree with this Although I love a zoom for event work I prefer two primes 16 f28/35 f2 or 23 f2 /50 f2 In both setup One is typically the main driver and does 90 of the work (16 / 23) and the other asks a telephoto/portrait lens when it happens to arise Comment from : @jmtphotographymedia |
10 or 20 photos from a day of shooting?! LOL Comment from : @svaphrodite |
I ended up buying a second camera after shooting my first wedding because I noticed how switching lenses really added stress Interesting to think about how even the possibility of shooting at different focal lengths adds cognitive load and how that could still be a problem even if switching camera is easier than switching lens on a single camera Comment from : @EmilWall |
f2 image!! Comment from : @sachintharavindu3356 |
wish i saw this sooner! i found out i take better shots with primes due to everything you’ve mentioned now i sold all my primes and going back to zoom with the mentality of using primes…at least i kept one of my zooms i am in love with so i didn’t waste too much money 😅 Comment from : @rumblebunz8081 |
As an armature, super agree with your last tip Intentionally limit yourself to one prime on a given trip/section Not only will it help you with FOMO since you’re more likely to catch shots for your focal length and more easily forgive yourself for missing those that don’t fit, but it will also help you get comfortable with that focal length when using a zoom So if/when you pick up your zoom, you will be able to use it more deliberately, artistically, and confidently because you know what you are looking for rather than just “being lazy zooming with your lens rather than feet” (which is not the same thing of course, it’s a flawed saying) Comment from : @TheDOS |
Using eos RP body while traveling and needing light and small with RF 50mm 18 and 16mm 28 Those are so small fitting in my pocket Sometimes I crop the 16 as if I’m shooting in apsc brbrIf I don’t want to carry 2 lenses I’m only taking the 35 18…brbrMy beloved 24-70 28 is not used anymore because to heavy and big I do prefer carrying two bodies instead with 35 and 85, or 24 and 50 Comment from : @pr4y |
Your last two points really hit home I finally know which lens is my “desert island” focal length (35mm f/14 full-frame, usually at f/56) and I never leave the house with more than one lens at a time It’s just so much more fun! Comment from : @bobsykes |
I have a 35mm and a 75mm prime lens Do you think I should also have a 50mm prime lens? Comment from : @sc1 |
Love my rokinon 8mm but I don’t get enough opportunities to use it Appreciated your comments about maximum apertures Comment from : @robertmcfetridge3480 |
Very helpful Thank you One prime makes sense My 24-64 mm zoom suddenly also makes sense! Comment from : @conchscooter |
I liked the f2 photo better :P Comment from : @damianseals |
I liked the F2 picture of the bridge more Comment from : @carlosr363 |
I do enjoy taking just one lens when walking around But when traveling a long distance for vacation I do not to be caught without having the right focal length Most likely 70 of my shots could be done with a normal prime but when you are doing street and train excursions into the mountains the 23, 35 or 50mm just aren’t optimal Most likely I will take my favorite prime in the bag and put a zoom on the camera Comment from : @Festvangelist |
F8 Defiantly Comment from : @paulc9139 |
wait my 33mm 14 can stop down?! Comment from : @ooharloo |
I don't know if many cameras have that but my A7III has an apsc mode, which you can simple turn on to crop into the imagebrSo if I shoot with 28mm I can quickly jump to like 44mm, which is probably my favourite Comment from : @jannisbmrt |
Using the word 'one' in the right context didn't make you sound posh (for whatever that is worth) It did make you sound fluent in the language which is great for the viewer Really appreciate your work by the way - the entertaining and well considered information and many of the images Thanks Comment from : @paramidge8935 |
I was on a Cruise 8 months ago and brought 4 lenses and used 1 maybe 2 lens My go to lens was the sigma 56mm Great video subscribed yesterday thanks for the content Comment from : @nore8141 |
Loads of good tips in this video, Roman! I love the one about having different primes in your bag is the surest way to be disconnected from your scene and your subjectsbrSo true, but until recently I had very difficult times to actually admit it myself! And yet, « less is more » Definitely! Comment from : @AmauryDescours |
Realisric ≠ better Comment from : @alexxx4434 |
Thanks for sharing I am trying to get back in to photography and I’m deciding between 35mm or a 50mm prime on my canon 600D with an 18-55mm kit lens which has been tucked away for years because I’m in the habit of using my phone !! I know , I know I’m thinking 35mm because the crop sensor would make it 50mm Comment from : @jt5261 |
I think it is with totally honest videos like this one that we beginners can learn a lot Thanks Roman for being so transparent about your photography thinking process, it´s great value for the time! Comment from : @estebanrighi8844 |
Hello mate! I’m a beginner/ hobbyist in photography, and I will be travelling to Paris next month I have 16mm f14, 35mm f18, 56mm f14 and 18-105 f4 Any suggestions which lens should I bring or should I bring them all? Comment from : @ayasibtv8049 |
