Interesting about the Puritans Almost like carbon offsets, eh? brOne would think, logically, commonsense-wise, if their religion, their ideology, was SO anti-money and profit, why did they even make this part of their ethos in the first place, throwing them into self-conflict and self-hatred? We know that humans are prone to duplicity or even triplicity, quadplicity, etc But there ARE people who didn't make money their god and lived more austere, non-materialistic lives in harmony with themselves, others, and nature Why did the Puritans not do this? Interesting brGreat talk by Dan 1000 spot on Comment from : @davidnyro19 |

11 years later I see the importance costing money to raise money I dont have a problem with overhead I have a problem with "why can't we solve anything?" Breast cancer, AIDS, homelessness, poverty I think the answer comes from the same place; it is not profitable to solve these things Someone must make money off this Comment from : @mztscrazytown1463 |

I cannot love this more A good friend in the nonprofit space sent me this video We created a software platform and mobile device to help save lives in at-risk communities We're aligned with nonprofits and corporates that care to help us save lives in at-risk communities like mental health, medical, and aging We're creating a nonprofit company that Text Lifeline™ can donate to and also receive donations from corporations that will allow us to gift a subscription to those who can't afford it and to those who need it most, like Veterans Dan opened my eyes to how we build the foundation for this nonprofit THANK YOU, DAN! Don’t be easily fooled by this guy “Non profits” mostly shift the onuses of social services onto little pop-up organizations that have to reinvent the wheel …instead of improving the infrastructure we already have via government and 501c have so little transparency and accountability they are like little “Benevolent” dictatorships America is so anti-government and worse yet doesn’t participate in government much and starves it both of oversight thereby and change but also of funds including through“Non profits” The NFL is also a “Non-profit” folks Comment from : @OurTube_TheOriginal |

Interesting talk and valid points Many charities do pay competitive wages and invest in processes and programs to expand their business I think the challenge is a small percentage of charities spend more money on “overhead” than actually is spent on the issue or problem that the charity was created to solve Even When the money raised increases year over year Most philanthropic people or institutions do not want less than 30 of their contribution to go to the people in need Many organizations/people do pay or enter into the “at risk” stage of starting a charitable organization They realize the expenses will be high in the beginning but expect the to come down over time Comment from : @stkedu |

I was 100 with Dan right up until he blamed a set of people in the Christian faith for the problem I was at World Vision, one of the largest Christian faith-based NGOs in the world (one of the "Hunger Charities" in his chart with low compensation), and at least 13 years before this TED talk, we were innovating like a for-profit company that many other non-profits have followed since The founders of Charity Water, also for-profit-like innovators, are Christians and got into philanthropy via inspiration from Mercy Ships (a Christian charity) In my view it's the opposite: most of the high levels of scrutiny I have seen over the years have been from the government, secular watchdog groups, the media, and non-faith-based donors Comment from : @multiversehacking |

The owners of the Federal Reserve create the currency called Dollars If they wanted to circulate their Dollars by infusing them into health and human services causes the same way they circulate by infusing their Dollars into war causes, for example, they could Apparently, they don't So besides changing the way we think about charity, we can also change the way we think about currency Instead of using and accepting and chasing after the currency of those who don't value health and human services, we can chase after a new form of currency that is issued by people who DO value health and human services, and who circulate their currency accordingly This new form of currency could be as simple as the gift certificate, and you could become an issuer These changes in thinking could bring abundance to all the good causes out there that seem to be in a perpetual state of struggle Comment from : @self-issuedcurrency |

Having charities is not changing the world It's just shuffling the deckchairs There is no need for charity if we didn't have interest on money Why is nobody talking about interest? Or how money is created? Why do we have to have "loans"? Why is there never enough money for our needs? Money is an arbitrary game, it should cater to all our needs if it purports to be a good system Having to take out loans is an admission that the system cannot sufficiently meet our needs Therefor change the system or get a new one You don't have charities for one thing You completely change the structure from pyramid, linear, vertical, supremacy/inferiority to a hub-and-spoke structure like in nature This gives every person sovereignty and body autonomy If you want to change the world you don't just shift the deckchairs Comment from : @deniseward002 |

The problem with this video is that it seems that the logic of why there are so much poverty and other social issues it’s because non profits are not having enough money to help people in need I mean, of course money helps, but that is not THE final solution, it just covers the real roots of the many social issues we have nowadays brWe cannot solve what we don’t understand So actually I only agree with the man in the part of investing more in people education and preparation for innovation But to do that means investing not just in the school system, but in the teachers and opportunities for the new professional and in the social networks, and in better research, and……brSo, solving social issues is never and should never have a simple solution Comment from : @cherrychapstick05 |

Amazing Comment from : @austindaily3091 |
|
|
Here's an alternate suggestion brbrIf an issue is important enough, we shouldn't be relying on private organizations to solve itbrbrFor example, implementing universal healthcare is better solution than relying on a charity to pay off someone's medical debtbrbrFor other issues like poverty and homelessness, we should address the root causes Income inequality and the rising cost of livingbrbrI don't trust the economic system and CEO's that created these issues to solve them Comment from : @katherinebourdiline7521 |

He says that private companies like Coca Cola can grow more easily than charities because they can spend more on marketingbrHis solution is to let charities spend more on marketingbrBut how about the opposite? Reduce the amount that corporations spend on marketingbrEspecially those which are already huge, and provide little social benefit Comment from : @maybepumpkins |

Mother Theresa did not ask for $ 05 mln salary to help the poorest of the poor That kind of money would prevent thousands of staving children from dying a year They only need $20 per month to survive… Let’s find both talented and compassionate people to run charities Also we can have one charity raising millions or a million people supporting their communities… I think we need both Comment from : @ewaoconnor7978 |

This might be the best and most needed Ted talk of our time Comment from : @amandasoares1798 |

This would be great if throwing more money at poverty would fix it Poverty is very much a cultural problem that any amount of money won’t fix Look at Native American communities that were suddenly injected with huge amounts of Casino money, crime skyrockets, drug and alcohol use increases, productivity of any kind all but stops, and school attendance falls off the charts Money is not the issue, what would happen if we could give every impoverished person 100,000$? I promise you it would be a total disaster Comment from : @AO-ip6yx |

I definitely don't expect people to all be volunteers but I don't believe that people should be making millions working for a non-profit Spending money on overhead when done correctly is absolutely necessary but making a $100,00-250,000 is more than enough Comment from : @sandyhansonruth8953 |
