Rich people become evil because they think they achieved everything by hard work When in reality they didn’t Comment from : Ultradian |
|
As a cashier, I always knew if a customer was low or middle-class income or lived in those separate neighborhoods IF a customer couldn’t afford all of their transaction, even short $1 (I always let it go if it was less than 50 cents I knew wouldn’t hurt my drawer or a couple dollars sometimes) but a poor person in a long line behind them will offer to help pay the difference They even shout “howbrMuch do they he/she owe?!” So they can help and get the line moving faster A middle-class person will literally Stand there annoyed they have to wait longer for me to void items off and never offer a penny, a dime, 15 cents nothing! They will look around (sometimes never look AT the customer in front of them) and impatiently wait for it to finish Nose stuck up in the air as usual And the ages don’t matter I’ve seen young people help elderly and vice versa but only if they “know the struggle”brOr have been there in the struggle before Comment from : LochNess |
|
Not entirely true, I've seen poor people crave power and abuse people more often than well off people Also, when the rich have done it it's almost always been for something that benefits them poor on the other hand do cruel things just to get pleasure from doing them Comment from : hardik vyas |
|
The current system takes the worst in us and rewards it So it's no wonder why at the top of our society will be the most ruthless, the most greedy, the most psychopathic individuals Afterall, a person is the product of it's environment And our environment is capitalism Comment from : Konst |
|
I disagree in most of what he said brMonopolies are mostly caused by special privileges granted by the government, so government intervention in economy is the problem, not the solutionbrThe moral is acting in one's own rational self-intreset, because it helps the individual achieve happiness and acquire and preserve values, which makes his survival possible in the first placebrBeing altruistic is something completely different from being respectful of other's rights and even kind: the first is evil, the second is rational and thus moral brSacrifice is nor an ideal, nor good by any rational standard brBill is wrong when saying the only importance of inventions is to achieve egalitarianism: its purpose is to bring the indivudal's standard of life who invented higher, and if he gains benefit from selling it, he's totally moral by doing sobrPeople should be equal only in one respect: politically, having same individual rights Everyone is different in all other respects: in their abilities, ambitions, values, etc, and that's just how life works and how we benefit from each other brCooperation should never be compulsory, as he is suggesting by promoting government intervention brHe's viewing morality as a matter of whose throats are going to be cut: either the rich cut the poors' throat or the poor cut the richs' throats I say that's a false dichotomy; if you pursue your self interest rationally, you should never even think about needing to cut your own throat nor others'brAny sacrifice is immoral, it doesn't matter if it comes from the poor or the richbrbrI suggest reading Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, by Ayn Rand Comment from : Jose Fabio |

I've become meaner as I've made more money Since I was dirt poor and now have a six figure income, the difference is unavoidable Main reason I'm less compassionate is there is a self serving need to nice and giving to the community when you're poor You need everyone's help to get by When you have some money you don't need anyone and it's easy to shrug off other people's problems Comment from : GtTingles |

So many conclusions or implications in this are wrong When you have mostly financial penalties for criminal behaviour of course rich people will not feel the same pressure to follow said law? Has nothing to do with morals and wealth The poor person's entire life could be affected by a simple fine Of course they are going to be stricter??? Like how is this some amazing discovery? brbrA whole video where you just let your audience draw the conclusions that make your point Bad form TED Comment from : Snow Man |

Rich people should not create private foundations etc to do "humanitarian work" (that also equals to inflating their ego + avoiding taxes) they should actually PAY as much taxes that the middle and lower income people pay proportionally (that is to say considering taxes on everyday life goods too) Comment from : Capuc!ne Chaussonpassion |

I really doubt a 45 minute video about child poverty is gonna make Jeff Bezos start treating his workers humanely and pay his taxes In fact, multiple years of self exposure to these issues seem to have only encouraged Bill Gates to practice eugenics and haven't moved Warren Buffet an inch in his monopolistic stance Comment from : Scorponox93 |

The truth is he was catering to an audience who believes they have no choice in the matter They were born into poverty and will stay in poverty for the rest of their life brBut the truth is everyone has an opportunity to become unbelievably successful in America no matter where you started brOne of the characteristics of an alpha male is to be giving, i’m a very rich man and I know a lot of very rich people and every single one I know would have given the entire $10 away brDon’t believe the bullshit lie that they want you to believe You can become a rich person and it starts with you believing you can Comment from : Austin Harrison |

The Monopoly experiment is an extremely poorly constructed experiment with incredibly biased extrapolations The main issue is that the participants know it's a game with zero real world consequences This is why when we play games with friends, we'll trash talk and demean them in jest Because we know that there are no lasting consequences from the game This experiment only works if the participants actually believed that their losing opponents would suffer real world poverty I am a fellow academic (PhD in the humanities) and believe the extrapolations presented here amount to serious violation of academic integrity Comment from : random9 |
|
Paul Piff is a severely biased and dishonest academic I saw the videos of the Monopoly experiment (in the Netflix documentary, CAPITAL, which obviously singles out the most egregious moments of the experiment) Not once does anyone do or say anything that shows a lack of compassion All they do is tell other players that they won't be able to pay, or that they lost the game There is no evidence of lack of empathy in those comments, mainly because the students were very well aware that this was no more than a game of Monopoly, after which their losing opponents wouldn't starve, wouldn't go homeless, wouldn't be bankrupt Furthermore, none of the participants attributed their win to the advantages they received because: 1) they were under the impression that they won that advantage at the start of the game, and 2) the question posed to them could very well be misinterpreted as a question of strategy There is absolutely no reason why anyone would feel the need to brag about a silly game of Monopoly Piff is not a true academic His bias is disgusting and detrimental to the study of human behavior I'm not saying humanity is altruistic at its core I'm only saying that Piff is a joke Comment from : random9 |

I wonder if the researchers in the Monopoly study accounted for certain biases In the first situation, the rich player and poor player were identified as R and L (right and left) In the next scenario, they were identified as M and F (male, female) In each scenario, the rich player was male, and white or Asian, and might be inclined to be more “dominant” in real life as compared to their counterparts I think I’ll have to read the full research paper Comment from : Nathaniel Wildstone |
