Haida art is a art formed upon countless generations and defended by countless generations, same story for all natives, their style created by countless generations, each time used, it is a form of honor to the ancestors creation In the past, you had to be born into the right to use certain crests, and any crest figure a person wants you to produce and not in your clan rights to use it, one approached a member of a clan and asked permission to use it for this one time If given the right to carve it, one paid that person for that permission Wars were fought over someone making use of a crest figure without proper permission and refused to make payments, and many died In this modern times, if you are non-native, what right do you have to cross this ancient rule and for what, just because you like the art? Disrespect of the highest order! There are stories we grew up with that told of the punishment handed out to any one who violates this ancient rule, "You had to be born into the right to use that crest figure!" I thought in northwest coast there was not straight lines, but in your ovoid the sides are straight and come up and curve or am i wrong and we cannot see the curve in the video because it's so mild? Comment from : @gachaifenerd9718 |

Thank you so much for sharing this Lance! I'm just learning about Lingít style formline drawing and this video was very helpful in understanding how to make my designs symmetrical! (Much easier with the tracing paper I'm seeing!) What is the material you are placing on top of the tracing paper throughout the video? It looks much thicker than a sheet of tracing paper, some sort of plastic I'm guessing Comment from : @flyingwrenproductions |

Is it okay and respectful of me, a non-indegenous white female, to try formline art? I am fascinated by it but do not want to cross any boundaries Comment from : @lehcaryllek9073 |

This is so useful We were given an 'art challenge' in the 'Lachri Group for Artists' for the month of March The challenge was to draw or paint a composition that contained 'something that flies', 'something that swims',' and the sun, moon, or stars I recalled viewing the 'Northwest costal Indian art when I lived in Washington State I found this and other videos when I was gathering some ideas of what to do This video displays the basic shape concepts Thanks for posting Comment from : @michaelparry1383 |
