I went to a democratic school in Israel First off- I would always recommend your kids to go learn in such in such environment! It was great and I felt that my voice was really heard and considered After graduation I can confidently say that I had full and fulfilling studding experience, because I genuinely was interested in what I was CHOOSING to learn and not forced to studybrAlthough the democratic system is not without faults Throughout high school I got the feeling that the individualism driven education was interpreted by many as education for egoism, there weren’t many talks about volunteering works that didn’t profit the school or talks about the common problems of modern society (and there are a lot of those for us seeing as we are Israelis) The only other fault of this education system is that sometimes the teachers would overestimate what we- the students- were able to handle, socially Sometimes- seeing as we were teenagers- the assumption that we can handle conflict ourselves is plausible, though as I went through high school I was faced with rather unconventional problem with my friends that was really nothing you should expect a teenager to handle alone- yet the school did nothing out of fear and the conception that we knew what we are doing even though we flat out said we don’t know what to do nextbrI know I ranted a lot but pleas remember that every democratic school is different, and that my experience was amazing for the most part! I said it before and I’ll say it again: the best thing you can do for your child is to send him/her to a democratic school

What democrats preach, they don't practice, I am hearing that in our local democratically controlled schools, sadly teachers trash talk kids for a variety of things, instead of giving the needed support they call them names and belittle them Way to go democrats When I was in school I remember a teacher talking to us about one of the kids who was absent that day on how we should treat him normally without name calling Sadly that was about 50yrs ago You have no idea how much rage I am feeling as I recently lost a family member who hated school due to others attitudes, and that teachers added to their problems And to hear that this was going on at least for the last 32 years is just sad Any teacher reported for name calling should be fired after a thorough investigation

I go to a steiner school But I also love the idea of trust that democratic schools give kids because I hate how adults are supposed more important whose poinions are more valid just becuase their older maybe slightly more experienced but everyone has different expereinces I like how teacher and pupils are seen as equals at these schools And that kids are trusted to learn It's not force fed :D

Nice intro Sudbury goes much further than what is outline here though It's not just a question of giving full power to the school meeting to make all choices including recruiting and budget It's also the idea that learning doesn't necessarily imply a need for teachers In practice, Sudbury schools usually don't have any teaching or lessons going on Learning is simply a by-product of living an ordinary life in a community
