I actually did have a "Mentor" who became my enemybrbrI was in college 10 yrs ago and an alumni was recruiting for an MLM pyramid scheme, of course I didn't know it was a scam when I joinedbrbrAs the redflags piled up, I didnt leave because I didn't want to be a failurebrbrInevitably I ran out of money, $2500 for a college kid back in 2015 was and is still alot of money brbrThe only silver lining was it taught me how scams operate

I want to congratulate you on producing the most Crack Jacks version of an explanation of Pierce's Pragmatism i heard or read since I studied Pierce 50 years ago Impressed? Once you have begun to define or characterize pragmatism in this sense as an ideology or school of philosophy, you’ve immediately misunderstood it Think of it as more like a methodology to apply to philosophical thought Forget Peirce Nobody really read him outside of his close intellectual friends (like William James), and there’s not much to read from Peirce anyway Pragmatism has more coherent roots in Dewey, and that’s the foundation for under Rorty, Posner, West, etc This is a valuable video, and has a wealth of great information However, by not distinguishing the pragmatism of one like Rorty from the positivism of one like Putnam Louis Menand’s collection (Pragmatism: A Reader) and his book (The Metaphysical Club) are the best sources for understanding this There’s a debate between Richard Rorty and Richard Posner from UChicago Law School with a lengthy Q&A after on YT that’s a great resource too

Pragmatism is why in spite of my belief in most of the tenants of the philosophical tradition of skepticism I am still fully functional Makes me more flexible in accepting things which defy my experience and expectation though if I am given better reason to believe that new idea It's interesting though how much pragmatism has in common with dialectical materialism and how thoroughly Americans, to an almost religious degree, reject the latter They both are more interested in examining the way things actually are and focusing on practical outcome But pragmatism goes right out the window the instant in contests doctrinal rules about American exceptionalism and Reaganomics

I remember when I was a student teacher in a elementary/middle school classroom Although the main classroom teacher I was assigned to wasn't a mentor per say; after a few weeks of teaching I started to feel anxiety and afraid of the main teacher Pretty soon I found myself in a pissing contest with her, so I tried to kindly covert the message that I was hear to student teach and graduate Student teaching is basically applying everything I learned about teaching and practice in a real life classroom brThe main teacher was supposed to leave me alone and just be there in the shadows in case I need assistance or help from her She had control issues and was always breathing down my back and offering advice I never asked for She expected me to be perfect and handle the classroom like she did She didn't like that I was younger and related better to the students I was able to implement new and exciting lesson plans and experiment with different classroom activities brIn the end, she saw me as a competitor and I tried to distance myself from her to lower my anxiety She didn't like that either Basically, I think she just wanted me to be more co dependent on her and see her as a "God-like" superior teacher that I need to respect and blindly listen to her I wonder if she's still teaching

I feel that Pragmatism goes hand-in-hand with Utilitarianism Pragmatism is about what's actually feasible to accomplish vs what we ideally iwant/i to be accomplished, Utilitarian is about judging actions by their outcome vs their intent In my experience, most people who think they're Utilitarians are actually just a different kind of Kantian They don't actually judge actions based off what actually happens, they base it off what they ithink/i happens based off flawed data, and no amount of hard, well-researched, peer-reviewed, verifiable and repeatable evidence to the contrary convinces them away from their prior flawed data
