I don't care what anyone say, Avatar is a great film, not saying it's the best but great What makes this movie even better is watching it on a flat screen TV, the visual effects is just mind blowing A movie only made 77 million in it's opening weekend, but end up becoming the highest film grossing of all-time ($28 billion by far), that's fucking impressive!!!!

There was a major snow storm on the east coast so most folks who wanted to see it the opening week couldn't As things got better weather wise they went to go see it the second week and it took off from there

I think it was because of varying times of Christmas shopping People who wanted to wait a week to shop saw the movie week 1, and the people who wanted to shop during opening week waited until week 2 and so on

It certainly helped that the movie was only released in 3D and IMAX 3D for most of it's run, and those tickets are nearly twice as much as regular tickets If Avengers and Jurassic World had done this, Avatar and Titanic would be 3 and 4 in box office history In fact, if you discount 3D and IMAX re-releases of Titanic, it WOULD BE #4

My theory about Avatar is a simple one I see it like the Phantom of the Opera when it first opened at the Curran Opera Theatre It was a traveling musical act that stayed for 10 years in SF The reason was it sold out every week Avatar was a spectacle that people knew the story, but the experience was more important than the content

Avatar opened on the same weekend as the blizzard of 2009, and most of North East was buried under over 2 feet of Snow That greatly effected it opening weekend numbers, and helps explain the drop of only 18

It's not that hard for a movie to drop less than Avatar in its 2nd weekend, if it opens the weekend before ChristmasbrHappened 7 times since Avatar already (only counting movies that opened in at least 3,000 theaters)

One thing a lot of people forget is it was the first movie in modern times to push 3D, and the new Real 3D Not saying it was the 1st, but the 3D was so far beyond what has been, and the whole CGI looking nearly flawless for the time So i think that is what gave it legs for days I know I didn't see it till close to a month after release And it was mostly because all my friends said just see it for the 3D alone

I think there is also another reason: since there were snowstorms in the weekend it opened many people had to wait to go see it which explains the pretty low opening weekend and pretty high second weekend
