I use quite a small amount of energy Comment from : @AllLoudNation365 |

Do you think I can put sharpie on colored LED lights to make them less bright?? I LOVE my tree, but the colored lights are not what I want Comment from : @MissConstable1 |
LED warm white is an oxymoron Comment from : @margoambro2274 |
I guess he hasn't heard of glass paint, I've been changing bulb colours for over 20 years! Comment from : @Chillmax |
1:02 but do they use little energy tho? LOL Comment from : @nathanlee105 |
I would love to see him test plain alcohol inks as a coloring option since that is basically what is inside the sharpie They can be applied with a brush but even easier if you just dip the plastic into the ink itself Comment from : @kokopuppy57342 |
5:38 I was waiting for Festivus to be mentioned 😉 thank you kind sir Comment from : @youdontknowme5969 |

Led lights must be made with addressable LEDs Adjust the shades and brightness as you wish Such things are already sold cheaply on every corner If you don't like the shades, go ahead and buy an Arduino for fine tuning Although now such garlands already come with brains controlled via a smartphonebr\rВ каждую гирлянду - адресные светодиоды Подстраивай оттенки и яркость как хочешь Такие штуки уже дёшево продаются на каждом углу Кому не нравится оттенки - вперёд за покупкой ардуино для точной настройки Хотя сейчас такие гирлянды уже идут с мозгами с управлением через смартфон Comment from : @kirikudr |
At first, I thought that there were lights specifically marketed for Hanukkah Good solution, tick everybody off, EVERYBODY Comment from : @dannypipewrench533 |
WE CAN ALL HAVE GREAT DISPLAYS WITHOUT BLINDING EVERY NEIGHBOR WITHIN A MILE OF OUR HOMES!!! Comment from : @normlor |
I think that gel nail polish would work, you can get "jelly" ones that are coloured and see through like stained glass, that you set under a UV lamp and they look really good on a clear nail, and since they're set under a lamp they would last outside and can be mixed to get a good shade of blue, even adding regular blue gel polish to it would help pigment/transparency wise Comment from : @erinkinsella91 |
YES BLOOPERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Comment from : @edwardevans7219 |
Kwanzaa is a fake and racist holiday invented by a criminal Marxist named Ron Karenga Comment from : @kritsadventures |
The blue specifically flickers and looks soooo blurry to me I Hate the new leds and truly miss the old lights Even the new white ones flicker to me Comment from : @jpmonti85 |

Imaginary white Sharpies? They are actually a thing - I use them when drawing layout on dark coloured cloths Comment from : @anthonyrich1592 |
I'm a bit late to the party, but have you tried alcohol inks? You could dip the lights instead of having to draw sharpie on Not perfect z but a hell of a lot easier Comment from : @hathorthecow7146 |
You can use ink from ballpoint pens It is necessary to dilute the ink with alcohol to reduce viscosity and immerse the lamps in this solution The transparency of the coating will depend on the number of immersions of the lamp To protect the coating from washing and scratching, you can cover it with a layer of transparent varnish Comment from : @rotten-Z |

Both my wife and I also have a disdain for LED Christmas lights When we got married and were looking to buy our first Christmas tree, the realistic looking trees we liked were only available pre-lit with LEDs Some warm white LED's are ok but since they are unidirectional, as another commenter noted, they just don't look the same and still don't offer the same spectrum of light as incandescents So we bought the tree we liked, I spent some time removing the webbed, tangled, mess of existing lights (luckily they were removable with standard plugs), and wrapped all-new incandescent strings around the tree Oh, also, the pre-lit variety only came with 500 lightswe strung 1,500 lights! That, in addition to a 70's "celestial" star tree topper and our Mr Christmas "Santa's Ski Slope", makes for one very festive tree! Comment from : @sergiomendez9231 |
Look up Zaponlack, though it's an odd mixture and probably is not available in US (hint: aliexpress) Bonus points for using larger lightbulbs for that vintage soviet style Comment from : @lordmrwhatsyourname |
4 years later brHave things improved? brDid your sharpie painting last? brWould a coat of nail lacquer work? brWhy am i watching this now? Comment from : @frazermountford |
Transparent acrylic INK was the missing ingredient here Comment from : @xjunkxyrdxdog89 |
this is so relatable However, my nostalgia for christmas lights requires the blue/orange/pink/red/green versions I am 21 years old and have my own set of vintage incandescent lights for my tree, and a collection of antique mercury glass baubles (VITAL for the ideal reflective shimmer from the lights) Specific festive lights gang represent Comment from : @colakelvins |
you need a glaze medium to add to the acrylic paint Comment from : @susanreynolds9947 |
Incandescent and florescent are horridbrYou may need some magic mushrooms to appreciate the pure elemental light produced by semiconductors Comment from : @ogxs1433 |
have to be honest, I no longer buy these types of lights ever since I got "Twikly" brand lights the programming (with my iPhone) is just too good Tons of holiday patterns (classic or modern) that's the way to go Comment from : @corrado |
Great work 🥳 Thank youuuuu 💜 Comment from : @13thravenpurple94 |
This series of videos has convinced me that this man may be clinically insane but by god I love it Comment from : @reilandeubank |
I don't know if this is like way too late or anything, but have you thought of using stamp ink? Using a thick sponge to apply the ink would work pretty well Heck, just dipping the fall into the bottom might work Comment from : @DrakeDoe |
I would love to know what paint the light bulb factories use to tint their bulbs It's obvious that some sort of coating is used (rather than using pre-tinted glass) since it tends to crack and flake off over time Comment from : @AdhamOhm |
bSO LITTLE ENERGY/b Comment from : @MayankJairaj |
I used sharpies and for yellow, I did a coat of orange and a coat of yellow and got a nice golden yellow color I added pink with red They look great Wish I could post a picture of them here Takes me back to the 1980s Comment from : @terrymeschke3376 |
Have you tries Krylon stained glass paint? Testors candy colors might be good too Comment from : @craigejacobs |
Hey, I don't know what's available at Menards (I live in the Wild and Wooly Woods of the Northwest(, buuuuuut my Ace carries (albeit, not with any consistency) "Frosted Glass" spray paint that comes in at least a handful of colors It's meant for windows, which means it's supposed to be translucent, and I believe it is somewhat resistant to UV rays It's got to be easier than sharpie May I suggest trying it when you inevitably redo this experiment? Comment from : @estoops1592 |
I am revisiting this video, and I disagree I like the incandescent color variety with magenta and orange Comment from : @brittany16950 |
I agree Blue is too bright it almost looks UV Comment from : @wilbur9416 |
Individually coloring each bulb with sharpies Call me crazy but I don’t think this method is likely to catch on Comment from : @kylestewart4444 |
Have you tried painting the colored lights with white paint for a frosted look? Comment from : @tph2010 |
You know they make LED light sets with smaller LEDs in a colored Or clear plastic shroud shaped like old school fairy lights You could just buy both a colored set and a warm whit set and swap the shrouds They should come off They have in my experience Comment from : @disqorddoge1101 |
I'm sure 90 of us are most nostalgic for the incandescent Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Pink lights Comment from : @someperson4712 |
I hate the modern LED lights The old ones were A LOT warmer Comment from : @GeneralKenobiSIYE |

I love this, but I want to try rit dye for plastic I use it to dye plastic discs for golf Wonder it it work for clear plastic 🤔 Comment from : @kaylajason8917 |
My favorite and what gets the most attention and a lot of comments are incandescent red and white strands twisted together Even though not many people can see my lights I have fun playing with them, this year I am using a method used on old world department stores but twisting the strands in to thicker web and running it around the window molding, just following what was used in the Home Alone movies which is basically department store/hotel designs from NYC at that time Comment from : @drscopeify |
I love how you used every holiday Comment from : @alexia3552 |
you could try dipping them in printer ink You can even get archival quality ink Comment from : @nonononono4068 |
What you need is some stained glass paint, also they sell aniline dyes that you can add to clear lacquer which will tint it to whatever color you want, all transparent Comment from : @taiwanluthiers |
Alec said happy holidays He wants to kill Christmas Comment from : @itchaii4490 |
7:36 Go Dawgs! Comment from : @gokblok |
1:11 because they use so little energy? Comment from : @shayan-gg |
If you use glass you could use alcohol ink for coloring the bulbs Comment from : @lespie98 |
So the Yellow bulbs have been replaced with Light Brown? Comment from : @Unhandled_Exception |
Christmas lights 🎄 Comment from : @catlady8324 |
We might not understand each other sir, my prefered chistmas lightning would be a set of lasers Comment from : @user-vn9ld2ce1s |
You need glass paint It is transparent and available in many colours and made for painting on glass (like those windows in churches) It forms a gelatine like transparent colour coating I have some glass painted with this in my house and it has not faded in over 10 years when not in direct sunlight / heatbrbrOr just add some colour to wood glue and use that since wood glue becomes transparent(ish) on drying I have not tried this so it is an experiment Comment from : @RonakDhakan |
THANK YOU!!!! Someone who understands my struggles every year! haha I REFUSE to put LEDs on my Christmas tree I enjoy the warm glow that incandescent lights give off I tried explaining to people that LEDs are unidirectional, unless they are diffused That's why so many LEDs holiday lights, especially ones from years ago, look the way they do I mean, you're looking at a yard, or even a Christmas tree with ALL THESE LEDs around, yet, it somehow still seems DARK I hate it!brbrYou have given me hope! I thank you Comment from : @KevboKev |
I have a blow pen that uses sharpies I 3d printer, it would be super fast to colour warm led set with it go's to buy new sets of lights I agree about the colour combination Comment from : @Soggstermainia |
I buy strings of just blue leds because of love the eerie unreal effect they have… Comment from : @mageyeah7763 |
Not me that loves white light Comment from : @defaultcamo4288 |
YES! SHARPIES RULE AGAIN! Comment from : @GMxTekhe |
I know this is old and I'm sure you found it but, model and hobby stores sell transparent paint for model kits I had red green and blue I used for a similar purpose it worked so well I bet of you popped the plastic caps off and painted the inside it would be more durable Comment from : @neonsigns6721 |
I've never encountered another human being with my EXACT opinions and frustration regarding the lack of quality in "imitated" incandescent lighting Comment from : @jasongreek2342 |
cool Comment from : @Daniel28021991 |
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE! LED MULTI COLORED LIGHTS HAVE TOO MUCH BLUE AND I HATE IT Comment from : @jamesmitchell7707 |
I'm way late to this, but I would suggest acrylic ink, such as dahler rowny (sp) artist acrylic inks You somewhat got there with sharpies, but yeah Inks Comment from : @Killercreek |
We LOVE the gentle twinkling white incandescent lights and have been using them for many years but as you stated in your video, they are hard to find! If I find them, I am going to stock up because the ambience these create cannot be beat They are so majestic Thanks for your videoinformative AND funny! Comment from : @damicodesignassociates3706 |
I love how you keep calling the lights with different titles Comment from : @ConnorRunda |
Tamaya clear coat would make a good blue They sell it at hobby stores Comment from : @olesideburns |
Honestly I've been very displeased with the blue lights back in the incandescent days You simply could not see the blue lights that well, especially from a distance And for some homes, distance is a very important factorbrWe had a flag pole out front and we ran three strands on it, an all-red, an all-white, and an all-blue The result? We had a giant candycane in front of our house because you could only see the white and red stripesbrBlue is just a really hard color to make visible amid other emitted colors Comment from : @marscaleb |
Fans, crazy idea: can we trick him into becoming an educational vid version of Lewis Black? Comment from : @d3fau1thmph |
You can literally go to dollar tree and get cheap Elmer's glue to thin out the paint, you could use mod podge to make it last longer Comment from : @aloemoss6985 |
I just got into your channel, but alcohol ink would work really well in my opinion A likely long lasting solution, and it usually gives even coverage Plus you could dip the bulbs, speeding up the process Comment from : @NeedleDrops |
Sharpies are made with alcohol inks or have you ever considered using alcohol inks It would even be dippable Comment from : @MrKirby365 |
Paint pens? Comment from : @WPIManiacMagic |
I feel so validated like ive always wondered why they didn't start with warm white for led colour sets I even have thought of trying swapping caps for a set lol Comment from : @Primogen18 |
There's one reason why this will probably never happen: white LEDs are more expensive to make because of the added phosphor to make them white, and most people probably wouldn't appreciate the difference Maybe someone will market colored caps that can be snapped over white leds Comment from : @RM_VFX |
I HAVE NEVER FELT SO SEEN Comment from : @johnniemoxie1395 |
LEDs are more glowy, and more glowy pleases my eyes Comment from : @-Bile- |
Have you thought about inks used in painting miniatures? It would need an acrylic/poly coating over it, but the blue would most certainly be more translucent Comment from : @ceramicmonster |
If you know anything about blue this should not have been surprising Took humanity a long time to make blue Comment from : @randyortonsbulge |
Unfortunately the Sharpied yellows look like the orange ones you don't like Comment from : @coryengel |
A little late to the game with this comment, but Meijer sells cheap LED Christmas lights that are the red, yellow, blue, green combination that appear to be white lights on the inside My wife bought some for our 2 year old’s small tree and I like how they look They actually do look a lot like the old incandescent lights Comment from : @hankcromer2935 |
New Technology Connections challenge, see how long Alec can go until he says "delightful" Comment from : @gabemckelvey6779 |
I used a red sharpie in highschool to color the dome light in my car Comment from : @MSG685 |
alcohol ink markers like copics will be more expensive than sharpies, but more effective if you've already got some kicking around Comment from : @stephlrideout |
