@sherrymaki25
Thank you for your video I suggest that to be accepted into the in-group, it's important to learn about the culture, and its history, before or as you are learning the language Especially if it's an endangered language, it's important to understand why it's endangered, and how language loss has affected that community

Thank you for the video Mr Kaufman Question: Do you think that a person's ability to learn or not learn a language well is due to or is influenced by how they feel about the people and the culture of the new language?
Comment from : @nicoledansby1805

@crazyfornaturalexistence9407
Yes that is all fact what you spoke I agree with you when learn others culture and language they treat us like we are from one of them as if came from their relation
Comment from : @crazyfornaturalexistence9407

@atalkingafro9632
It’s a matter of thick skin but we also need to learn how to let go of our ego if we want to ever make progress in another language ESPECIALLY US AMERICANS!
Comment from : @atalkingafro9632

@nysevicente2913
Such a great reminder! Immersing yourself in a culture for me is such a fun aspect of language learning, you learn about another's culture whilst realising the uniqueness of your "own"

@timothydouglas9474
Steve, you recently posted a video on the subject of locals replying in English when addressed in their native language In general, I have found that those who reply to you in English are less willing to accept you, while those who are willing to speak to you in the native language are more accepting I agree with you that it is best to "bounce off" those who see you as foreign and thus reply in English and find those who welcome you in their own language You are right that as your language skills improve, you will find that (1) more locals accept you and (2) locals accept you to a greater extent Some people will unfortunately never accept you but sometimes that is due to their mentality and not to any failure on your part to learn the language and integrate into their society You mentioned in the other video that people replying in English are not a big deal because you didn't learn the language to talk with them; equally people who don't accept you are not a big deal as they are not the reason why you are trying to be part of the culture Better to find those who are open to you!
Comment from : @timothydouglas9474

@justin02905
Trust me, you don't want to be "in"

If it's respect and sense of welcoming you're looking for, you must earn it Just because you're learning a language, it doesn't give you an automatic pass of respect and acceptance Sure the better you speak, the more impressive it is, but it's also about who you are as an individual brIt doesn't matter how well you speak the language or how many languages you know if you're unpleasant or boring If you can demonstrate that you respect the culture, have a sense of humor, and are interesting, it will help more than if you're unpleasant and brag OR if you know the language but you're boring and have the same one-off conversation with everyonebrJust because you're learning the language, don't pretend like you somehow belong to that ethnic group since you weren't born into it nor raised with their values If you don't look and act the part, you'll always stick out like a sore thumb

@murphy903
I think what is really amusing is when you meet an older person and they can't imagine that you can't read, write or speak their language Kind of like elderly people in America Since they've been speaking their language all of their lives and their children can speak it, they can't imagine that you can't I've even heard them say, "It's so easy" I just laugh
Comment from : @murphy903

@murphy903
I live in China and became a student of the language about 4 months ago I'm learning in LIngq I can speak enough right now to live day to day quite easily Sometimes, I get a quizzical look when I speak I don't know if it is because I said something wrong or that they are just shocked that I can speak to them at all Whatever the case may be, I always get what I want without any trouble So, no big deal Being misunderstood isn't fun, but, it isn't a big deal either Like Steve said, just go with it We take what we think that others think of us far too seriously The truth is, they don't think about us much at all Get over yourself and enjoy the beauty of learning a language as well as the rest of your life

@EasyFinnish
Very good topic Steve!brbr"So stop speaking English and learn OUR language" Many English native speakers have said that they have problems to learn Finnish language even they've lived in Finland for long time The reason for this is that many Finnish people speak English very well and Finnish people want to speak English to show how good they are in English and also it might be our hospitality, we don't want that uncomfortable feeling in conversationnormally those who are not native English speakers and live in Finland learn Finnish very fast comparing to native English speakers brbrI think it is not hard to get in our groups here in Finland but to understand us it needs to some knowledge of Finnish language
Comment from : @EasyFinnish

@Circaman8
This is NOT an issue when learning Brazilian Portuguese Brazilians are so chatty and friendly They love gringos, and you won't have a problem making friends or being accepted
Comment from : @Circaman8

@julianzuloaga

Every culture thinks they’re really open to outsiders, but if you ask the immigrants themselves you get a different answer

Maybe some cultures are less welcoming of foreigners who clearly don't look like they're native speakers of the language or who seem like they don't know the culture very well If you weren't born into a culture or raised with their values, pretending to be one of them seems strange or foolish to some if you don't look the partbrbrFor example, Southeast Asians seem to get along very well with each other Like a sibling relationship and sometimes it's hard to tell our ethnicity from appearance (so approaching someone and guessing wrong can lead to a bad first impression) brbrFilipinos in particular treat each other like family, and we embrace foreigners We find them interesting and want to know about their culture Philippines is the 12th most populous country so you bet there are lots of foreigners here, and we welcome all of them with open arms, some even calling it home and it's nice they feel welcome Communication is easier because we speak good English among SEA countries, BUT if you know even a little of Tagalog or show interest in our culture, we'll love you for it Of course the better you speak Tagalog, or the more you respect the culture, the cooler we find it brbrAlso around 25 of nurses worldwide are Filipinos and the number will likely only increase, and many Filipinos live abroad You haven't lived life unless you visit the Philippines once, so why not learn the language? Not many people try and chances are a community of native speakers live in your city Once you get along with them, they're friends for life and even treat you like family So if you think it's worth the time, do yourself a favor and learn Tagalog

@bobbylewis2
How many words are generally needed for fluency? I'm about to hit the 20,000 known wordmark in French (albeit I dont remember all of them) but I'm not really even close to fluency I can read C1, write B2 and listen to B1/B2 but I dont feel that I'm close to achieving fluency yet

@yourfirstsecondlanguage4782
Well said Steve though to be fair on the whole I’ve found more people to be extremely welcoming when I’ve had a go at learning their language maybe I’ve just been lucky though with the languages I’ve been interested in and their associated people (Arabic and Southern European languages mostly) I guess some cultures are more ‘reserved,’ Far Eastern, north Germanic etc though maybe these are stereotypes from my ignorance but that’s the impression I’ve generally had
