Really well explained video! I'm an ex investment banker from London (product side) Couple things I thought would be helpful to share brbrCoverage vs Product IBbrI found work/life balance on the product side to be much better than on the coverage side I never worked a weekend in my 1 year stint in IB The work you do can be quite similar to a Sales team, but you work on deals as opposed to flow transactions (sometimes flow is set up too) The skillset is quite different in that you don't do valuation models / accounting Of course compensation was worse, but only by a little bit (for junior bankers at least) brbrSales and Trading brIn my opinion I think your perspective on Sales and Trading seems mostly like Sales Trading can be a very different set of skills and is a lot more quantitative / problem solving You need to think about hedging, structuring and build properly mathematical models In addition, the exit opportunities for trading are good I think they are much more suited to hedge funds (and quant funds) than IB and equity research employees Equities are one of many asset classes, so the skills won't be so transferable IB and equity research people are usually less quantitative / lose their knowledge while working in IB and equity research because the type of math is more basic ( change and ratio vs statistics and calculus) brbrThese are just my two cents though Once again, really great video! Ex equity research analyst here - the other thing I'd mention is that generally speaking sales & trading seems to suit more extroverted people who enjoy talking to clientsbrEquity research from a personality perspective tends to suit introverted people who like to go in depth with detail better than sales trading However you still need to wine and dine clients etc build relationships with the corporates under your coverage I found the latter seemed to come earlier in my career (from end of year 1 onwards) for ER than my IB peers Comment from : @stonchong |

Hey Ben, great video Big fan of the channel, congrats on Wharton (Katalan's options class and Wry's entrepreneurship classes were some of my favorite) Just to knit pick a little bit, I would probably say that prop trading has an equivalent if not more lucrative exit opportunity as those you've listed I believe that it pays better than Private Equity with significantly less hours and is only accessible from school directly or experience in S&T (obviously only comparing the big firms, Citsec who offered fresh grads 400, Jane St, HRT, Optiver, etc, etc) Comment from : @xgarrison96 |
