You have too look beyond average share cost If your available money to invest varies, you should never delay your entry in the market in order to DCA, that would be indirectly timing the market which goes against the core principle of DCA Always put the money to work as soon as possible Even if you invest irregular amounts, you’re still effectively practicing DCA by consistently investing at least the minimum amount you would normally contribute, plus any extra funds when available and removing emotional decision making

I don't think it's necessarily a mistake to not DCA The benefit of DCA'ing is you reduce variance, but the downside is you lose EV (expected value), since you'll have money sitting there waiting to be DCA'd into your ETF, earning a lower expected ROI in the meantime
