I started out subcontracting in new construction Was way too hard on my body Moved into renovations, mostly on my own, much better, its still physical, but many different jobs rather than repetitive production brI try not to work by the hour on cost plus jobs because I can only charge 50-60 hr Yet if I bid a 15000 bathroom I quietly make 100 plus per hr and the customer is often happier with such a good dealbrI'm close to retiring and think a good part time job is handy manning, but Id want to charge 100 plus So 2 hours repair work is 250 plus materials, and including my driving time to the suppliers No idea if its workable Well see Comment from : @markoshun |

Carpenter really do not get paid enough I would not tell any young person to be a carpenter I have been in the cabinet business over 50 years still can’t make a real living the immigrants will take up the slake don’t speak English but they will work late in to the day on holidays weekends and you will get a shit job but you will pay them Comment from : @Keith-do2jm |

If it's so hard to find carpenters, why don't carpenters charge more? This isn't meant as a accusative question But it's clear that customers have an expectation that carpenters are cheaper than they should be Doesn't this mean carpenters should start charging more? If one waits for customers to be willing to pay more, one will be waiting forever Am I missing something? Comment from : @Tiger74147 |

I'm 23 right now almost 24 I would love to get into the trades again (did HVAC for a little bit) but a big problem in the US is a lack of apprenticeship programs, a lot of companies don't want to train workers Comment from : @salvatorevitale138 |

Plumbing isn't all new construction work 80 of my business was service and repair and I worked myself out of business when my body finally gave up Working in ditches to hanging off ladders and platforms and roofs , its all in the job plus a lot of nasty jobs on the service end This just scratches the surface, plumbing is not just cut and dry Comment from : @deanthompson3087 |

i just started out on my own doing exterior/interior finish carpentry, been working for other people almost 15 years now every customer i had so far tells me they cant find anyone to do the work they need done its just me and my tools out here so my strategy has been to charge more than i would normally so i can pace myself, take the time to do the work right, take time to rest so i dont injure myself Not trying to slam jobs out as fast as humanly possible like the guys i worked for Honestly its been great i havent been told "no" on my price, not even once if i go hard on a deck one day, i charged enough i can take a rest day afterward (or do a short day with light work) its nice to go from feeling expendable to being irreplaceable and needed demand is high, the pay should match Comment from : @ando1016 |
