This is three years late, but I just found this channel I'm only here to say thanks for the link to your Oak ID page It's awesome I've been checking out such pages for a month or two now and it is by far the most useful page I've seen yet The biologists who are posting similar info should take a peek at it It's very will thought out and makes sense Congratulation on having done an excellent job Comment from : @stpetie7686 |

Wow thanks I was told burr oak acorns were NOT liked bt deer too bitter?…saw em in tx…gigantic acorns!…im lucky enough to get to see many different types in my swamp on pearl river at ratliff ferry at lowerhead dam…which is pretty much central Mississippi northeast of ross barnett reservoir we planted over 50 sawtooth 20 yrs ago…which were around 6’ at planting…overcupp is common for us as well swamp chestnut …but logging is wiping us out of swamp chestnut…sickening…amazing acorns come from em…we have many reds and whites too…im still looking for some natural occurring shumard and nuttall…oak treea are amazing but very inconsistent for deer food…im finding hard way…i wish you would come visit at our club it would be a treat to get good school on oaks you seem very knowledgeable on trees period!…lotsa talkers lotsa incorrect rumors on this subject…oh yea!…i got to see some different chesnut oaks in the smokies around townsend area…longer acorns but still huge!…thanks again Comment from : @davidsvoboda7307 |

They should outlaw laurel oaks!! They rot from the inside out and one day the tree will fall apart!! Florida has too many of them and tree trimmers keep busy cutting down 1,000's of them each yr! Comment from : @joesmith7427 |

Do you know if the same species of oaks can pollinate one another like say two different white oaks cross-pollinate Just think it would be interesting to know Hybridization of plants for the nursery trade is extensive but have not heard or seen the practice of cross-pollination of oak trees Comment from : @careyjohnston4176 |

Very well done, thank you Comment from : @ronadkins1817 |

Great, thanks a lot for your excellent information, I didn't know about such kinds of oak before, I am a cooper and I usually use american white oak for my barrels, I have two questions br1- why red oak is not used for making barrel?br2- which kinds of white oak in your description is used mostly in making barrel?brIs it possible for you to show a cutting slice of each oak in your channel? Thank you! We’ve got what seems thousands of white acorns dropping in our neck of the woods right now I actually came to see why some our dropping different colors from light green to almost a shiny black The dogs love acorns but they leave the black ones which I’m assuming are overripe and they leave the light green - green ones, underripe I wish the deer herd was larger again, much easier to clean up the acorns 😂 Comment from : @elained9591 |

Terrific video I am a 63 YO gay man who grew up on a Virginia farm but there is so much I never learned regarding tree identification Our farm was almost 100 self-sufficient when I was very young (ie, we grew all manner of food in garden and fields, and also hunted, fished, and had livestock to provide the rest) If we didn't grow it or raise it, we didn't eat it (we were poor) My father was a prolific hunter Before he died he intimated that adults in the family suspected that at an early age (long before puberty) I was "funny," which meant gay in those days because I loved to go hunting and I was an excellent shot; however, I didn't like shooting animals I also got upset when we butchered cows and pigs (which were like pets to me) Anyway, my father didn't impart a great deal of tree specific info to me, so I know only the basics (and my college degrees are in mathematics and computers) So your video taught me so much and I very much appreciate it You even showed me a couple oaks I have never seen here in VA Comment from : @WinfreyWright |

Loved your video! We have an oak in S Texas (Hill Country) that is very popular with bow hunters They line the sides of hills and are relatively small trees They drop acorns early, usually Sept-Oct and they are the most colorful trees during fall, going from solid green to yellow, orange and red Bow hunters love them as they attract deer Just wondering if anyone knows the name of this oak? The only other oak in hill country drops acorns later in the season It has a small leaf usually about the size of the first joint of your thumb The leaf is oval in shape and has a sharp point on it I want to plant the first variety but can’t remember which ones they are Can anyone help? Outstanding detailed overview! brThank you from Virginia Beach; I'm subscribingbrThanks also for mentioning Sawtooth Oak - I spent several frustrating hours of my life in 2022 trying to identify one! Sawtooth acorns are notably bitter, leading to more seeding trees Sawtooth's fast growth also leads to storm breakage a hazard during hurricane season Comment from : @jeffjones6951 |
