This is a great approach for transactions in registered accounts but if we do the same in non-registered account, it will trigger capital gains when you sell DLRU & there could be huge tax implications for large investments in the same year How would you get such benefits in Registered account without triggering capital gains? Comment from : @sunpriya837 |

With WS premium you can trade with US dollars and you only pay a 15 conversion fee ofc you pay another 15 if you convert back to CAD, but you can trade and receive US dividends in USD the video is old tho, not sure if WS didnt offer premium at the time Comment from : @EBooksForMe |

Can you do a video translating my accountant ? (I pass-out reading it)br
br1-The profit/loss from trading Canadian securities may be treated as capital gain/loss (on capital account) by election, even if you trade as a business (on business account) including short sales and options Since this is an "election", missing it might mean missing some opportunities, but not causing a penalty in-and-of-itself, unless you did not make this election, but proceeded as if you had This election does not apply to foreign/US securities
br2-Holding foreign properties (stocks, foreign bank accounts etc) may trigger T1135 reporting for "specified foreign properties" Missing that reporting will cause a significant penalty and leave the tax return not "statute-barred" for another 3 years: this means that the original 3-year limitation period for CRA' reassessing your returns will become a 6-year one I had a client who stumbled on this and, unfortunately, was audited by CRA in a comprehensive manner (for some other reasons): CRA was able to rely on non-filing of T1135 to open a few older years of returns to conduct more audits, which makes the process more horrendous
br3-Foreign exchange issues: if you trade foreign/US stocks with their domestic currencies, the spot rate may be required for each transaction, and each transaction has to be translated into CAD individually, which may trigger additional costs The complexity can be further compounded by real-time tracking of the cost amounts of the securities (as required by the law)
br4-US/Foreign financial institutions do not follow the Canadian statement issuing standards, and accounting directly from these statements can come with additional costs Sometimes these foreign statements may or may not be readily available for Canadian tax reporting However, if the foreign/US stocks are held within a Canadian institution, the Canadian institution's statements are expected to be more efficient to follow Comment from : @AndyWarhol1962 |

Hi Adrain,brIt didn't get this part @ 9:40 [40 x 40 / 37] What are those two 40s, as well as the drip? Comment from : @EElia-bj9tp |
2 conversion fee from Can$ to US$ but what about when you sell and that US money gets converted back to your Canadian TGSA 3:37 Are you hit with another conversion Also when you sell the US or Can ETF your hit with a $495 or $995 us selling fee that you never did mention You talked about no fee for buying ETF’s but never mentioned what happens when you sell Wealth simple has no fee when you buy or sell Canadian ETF’s Comment from : @WayneParsons-b8h |
Hi Adrian, your videos have been incredibly informative, and I appreciate the insights you provide on investing I've been considering your advice on buying USA stocks under the RRSP to avoid withholding taxes However, given my current situation of being in the lowest tax bracket with no expected salary increase in the next few years, it seems the RRSP may not be the best fit for me, I also have not open a RRSP account On the other hand, I'm eager to explore investing in the USA market for better opportunities Since I only have a TFSA Questrade account, do you think it would still be profitable for me to buy USA stocks under my TFSA? I value your perspective and thank you for your hard work in sharing your knowledge Comment from : @luisfranco7760 |
I’m with Questrade and I’m not happy with the difficulty in buying US stocks This is ridiculous May as well just buy a Canadian etf invested in us stocks Don’t have to deal with all the pain I would love to buy apple or Microsoft but I cant Comment from : @Labrador15-o2y |
You are not clear on this When you say they charge 2 on a conversion from Cnd to usd But does that mean every time I want to convert more? Say I convert 1000 today but next month I need to convert 1000 more Comment from : @Labrador15-o2y |

Hello, Adrian! Hope all is well Seeing this video was posted 3 years ago, is Questrade still your broker of choice? Comment from : @mohammedlayes9248 |
Hi Adrian I know this video is old but for RRSP withdrawals Questrade charges withholding tax 10 upto $5k, 20 upto $15k and 30 above $15k withdrawalsbrAlso deregistration fees for full withdrawals $100 plus tax and partial withdrawal $50 plusbrSo you are loosing lots of money in tax I don't know how it's beneficial to invest with Questrade either for CAD or US market Comment from : @denverd513 |

Nordstrom at 40 Ouch, that's gotta hurt ($16 as of now)brbrBut I wanted to thank you for these videos You're teaching me how to use Qtrade in an easily understandable and interesting way And a huge thanks for revealing that US withholding tax if I use a TFSA for US stocks That would have cost me a lot of money You said that is avoided with an RRSP and, I'm going to assume, for a margin account as well Checking out your recommended video on Norbert's gambitbrbrThanks again! |
There are ETFs like XQQ which are Canadian based ETF but has Nasdaq companies in them Do you feel they are better than holding individual stocks like google, Facebook etc? We do not have to pay any conversion fees on them
br
brAlso, do you suggest to keep US tech stocks in TFSA, since they do not pay any dividends and are not taxed One demerit I could think is it will kill my room for TFSA but I foresee US tech stocks growing at a much faster rate than Canadian dividend stocks and on my returns which I expect to be high, I do not want to keep them in margin or RRSP account I will also hold Canadian dividend stocks but 30 of my tfsa I want it to be US tech Comment from : @mustafahussain2416 |
What type of investing account should you use to invest in high dividend stocks? I understand that your TFSA would be the best to avoid taxes on those dividends, but wouldn't you end up hitting your yearly cap pretty quick if you continued to reinvest those dividends as well as your own money into your TFSA account? Or is it not that big of a deal to use your own personal trading account as long as your contributing to your RRSP to help with the taxes brought on by the dividends / stocks? Comment from : @adamviste7414 |
Hey Adrian I opened an account with your code I didn’t get $50 as you said I spoke to them and they said it will come in 60 days… is that how it happens? Comment from : @viceroycres1967 |

br
brAlso, I want to trade intraday so I am looking to invest in index and not EFTs Indices are more volatile, which is what I'm looking for Comment from : @KunalkiRaay |

Could you please make a video on how to buy shares from all over the world through questrade Comment from : @PeyoteCowboy |
@Canadian in a T-Shirt, what are your thoughts on the $10/month subscription through Wealthsimple to avoid ALL the fees you're talking about and eliminating the need to using Norbert's Gambit? Perhaps if a person doesn't hold any dividend paying ETFs they could subscribe and unsubscribe to this service when buying or selling >$666 ($666 x 15 is $10) stocks/etfs inside of their RRSP rather than keeping the subsciption active At what point would it be more feasible to use this service permanently to avoid all US commission and foreign exchange fees rather than paying 15 - 20 per transaction or $10 through Norbert's Gambit? Comment from : @mechalchuk |
amazing video thank you!! did not realize that about wealth simple Comment from : @developerann6659 |
Question… I live in Canada but have a US bank account which is in USD (I use it for business since I sell online on the us market) It’s a BMO Harris account Can I transfer USD to my Questrade?
