This 1880 PR53 Trade dollar has a light golden patina to it rather than the usual frosty white raised areas & dark reflective fields Too bad it got used as pocket change back in the day rather than being preserved as a presentation piece

If a coin of this vintage is not from a proof-only year, how do you tell if the coin is a proof? Circulated proof coins from this time period often look essentially the same as the non-proof coins to my uneducated eye

Benyou really did not explain sufficiently how to detect a proof coin through visual examination rather than relying on the Red Book telling one of the years only proofs were minted A slightly circulated coin can have reflective field surfaces as well so how can graders tell a proof from a business struck coin in years with both strikes?
