Debris/toning accumulation on the surface of any metal has an acid base, if not removed it will change the surface of a coin over time All the dirt is good for is hiding already worsening future defects by deepening what once was a superficial scratch now deepening into a gouge a hundred years down the road Comment from : @pauldentler7127 |
I love toning too, but the major Grading companies runs the show when deciding AT or NT, so dipping is a way to remove the so called AT, to hopefully get a straight grade, it is a gamble just like everything nowadays Comment from : @waynewilson5021 |

I cleaned my 4 Half Sovereigns 1890 to 1904 which were really grubby lots of dirt caked on them , they really did not look appealing I cleaned them with soap and water Figured that as they are 22 k they could handle u scrub and as they are not of numismatic appeal Decided I had nothing to lose by doing so They came out well imo I wouldn't do it to any of my 24k pieces Comment from : @SilverBullet337 |

Just an FYI, EZest does NOT clean the coin, it brings a coin back down to its 'strike' finish If you watch or know of "CoinHELPu's" channel here on Youtube, he explains it very well He routinely sends in coins to be graded after dipping them in EZest and they don't come back graded as 'cleaned' Now, I WOULD NOT dip a high value coin myself, but have tried EZest on a bunch on dirty Benji's, Washington quarters, and 64 Kennedy's with great results! Again, use it at your own peril, but yea, the stuff works very well Comment from : @ct87gn25 |

I go metal detecting, and done very well! I've been lucky enough to have found both 1877 and 1909S Indian Head Cents And a 1905 $1000 Gold Eagle, and in the same hole a 1880 $500 Gold Half Eagle Oh Yeah, there was a 1903 Barber dime with them Plus Walkers, Standing Liberty's, Seated Liberty halves, dimes, half dimes Plus a couple of trimes I love my metal detecting!!! With all the silver I've found, I started a killer Indian Head Cent collection I've got a collection of almost 260 IHC's 98 of those are variety coins I try to keep a AU grade standard or better I've got 29 Published Plate Coins, with both Rick Snow and David Poliquin 7 of which are Discovery Plate coins I've got 69 of the Top 100 And I have almost all of the Snow 1's I'd really love to get your opinions about Indian Head Cents And do you deal in them at all??? Your friend in IHC's,Joe Comment from : @joeseiller2478 |

I dipped one of my coins, just to see how it did It had a weird spot on it, like it had been misted by a chemical or something It wasn’t anything special, so I wasn’t terribly concerned Comment from : @Sjackson2369 |

Put an aluminum foil in a dish with your coin or bar over it Submerge in boiling water and sprinkle baking soda over it (Arm Hammer works fine) The chemical reaction will remove the toning from your silver bullion If some remains just repeat the process Comment from : @BA-lt2tx |
Wonder if that stuff gets milk spots on maples Comment from : @cockroachdeloach5093 |

Thiourea coin dip removes silver sulphide deposits, but doesn't attack silver metal However, even after dipping to remove the obvious AgS, there is still considerable AgS that is not obvious If left in solution, the thiourea will continue to remove this "invisible" AgS, which may negatively affect the topography of the coin's surface and cause a loss of luster Comment from : @snarky_user |

Adrian is the man! Nice job guys!! Comment from : @TtheSilverStacker |
It’s not an acid , it’s however ammonia which will literally strike off a small surface which will not make a difference in weight or size It does remove all tarnish and for Gods sake do not over use it A little known fact is that after you have used the solution for some time you will notice a little bit of grains starting to settle on the bottom This is pure silver or whatever other material that you have used and it will contain a small amount of the metal in solution until you get it out, usually through electrologist or any other means of bringing silver out of solution Comment from : @Kcconnor |
Always an informative showbrbrIf I have a really dirty coin or discolored coin I wrap it in a hydrogen peroxide soaked tissue or rag It won't take everything off but, sometimes you can get to see the date Comment from : @sammiceli7645 |
Not exactly true NGC has a restoration process but if you send it to them, no matter what the situation was, it will always come back CLEANED Regardless of the service they will send it back and graded “ Cleaned “ coin with a AU , MS EF, type with no other name that they will give you Unlike ANACS who will still give it a number back with the grade designation Which in my opinion is more of what a coin grading company should do Comment from : @Kcconnor |
