Super, thanks, ( turned off the main fuse for the oven, never use it now! you do have to factor in buying the pressure cooker and I note used a big one but are cooking for two a smaler model there are some around 25 itres and you will waste even less powerbrMarvelous video, thanksbrbut can you not add international temperatures not just old imperial ( old british like) temperatures to help my old brain Comment from : @johnclarke1319 |

2nd Part: Microwave vs induction plate vs air fryer 😊 Comment from : @florisdelfino |
How much did appliance x use to cook that thing The answer is watt-hours, not watts Watts only tell you how much power an appliance uses in a given moment Comment from : @marionsutcliffe1119 |

Very helpful, useful video I'm glad I stumbled onto your channel I also use a Sun Oven when weather allows The weather needs to be sunny and also very little wind I love using it! If you follow the use instructions it works wonderfully It has a built in thermometer and I use an extra one inside just to be sure of accuracy My food will boil/simmer easily Comment from : @susankilstrom6852 |
Crock pot Comment from : @arlene8587 |
I still vote for my crock pot😁brShe cooks for me while I'm at work Comment from : @cynthia6771 |
Insta pot Comment from : @beverlylovenuk8874 |
As well as an air fryer, it would also be interesting to see how much energy a microwave would use - thanks for the interesting video - maybe a mark 2 video????? Comment from : @keepsmiling1484 |
Instant pot, since it cooks faster Comment from : @jefferynordgulen4436 |
Hello Hope! What a great video - thank you for sharing this information I sort of guessed which appliance would win but thank you for sharing the excellent tip of saving the seeds! Comment from : @ritajames7797 |
Have you tried this using an air fryer? Comment from : @deannarowley6279 |
Love my pressure cooker, crock slow cooker and my air fryer Comment from : @nedracrouse8125 |
That over looks like its 300 years old a proper modern over is highly insulated what over you have makes so much difference and yeah a pressure cooker was invented for to make things quicker and with less energy that thats kinda obvious Comment from : @hermanfinkelstein5039 |
That was amazing! I have switched to using my intant pot and I am glad to have your studey to back my suspicioun, Thank you Comment from : @sandradeangelo1874 |
Excellent content!!! Comment from : @radiationshepherd |
I knew it would be the instant pot! We love ours and I feel an air fryer would be very efficient as well, but I don't own one of those yet Comment from : @whitepinehomestead |
Thank you so much! Your video was amazing I have a new Insta pot on my counter, gathering dust, however; not anymore I will now be using my oven to store pots and pans lol Comment from : @dorisx1705 |
Likely the air fryer will give the Instant Pot a good run for first placemaybe the Instant Pot takes less time thus less energy But I prefer the caramelization that the squash gets cooked in the oven Just add a little butter and honey 🍯😋👍 Comment from : @titania145 |
Biggest energy hog will be the wall oven Instant pot pressure cooker will use the least energy The slow cooker will be more energy hungry than the Instant Pot,depending on how well it is insulated, which will use less energy, even though it will be on longer Comment from : @mikedunn7795 |
Impressively informative! I will take this valuable data into consideration planning my home energy usage Very good analysis Comment from : @josephjdesouza |
Did you take into consideration that that wall oven looks to be quite old (by its unusual color (Honestly, I've haven never even seen an appliance that color!!) as opposed to the more modern "energy savings" appliances that are available and prevalent today? This would make some difference I was also thinking that the instant pot since it cooks so quickly and efficiently it should also be a real contender I choose one method over the other based on how I want the food to taste and look A chicken roasted in the oven Looks and tastes one way vs cooking a chicken in the crockpot is very different for different dishes An older toaster oven like you have there is going to use a different amount of energy than a brand new convection oven: I don't even have a toaster oven because I have a new convection oven NOTE: I like to roast my butternut squash other side upI put butter and maple syrup in the cavity for a incredibly delicious taste When I roast a chicken, I am ALSO roasting squash on the top shelf, and a rice casserole as well Using my ranges oven I cook an entire meal (plus leftovers) AT ONE GO- so on the end I believe it is saving me money! Comment from : @donnaallgaier-lamberti3933 |
I cook mostly with a crock pot I wouldn't know how to make soup without it!! Comment from : @diannegauthier5301 |
I know it is hard to measure at home, that my guess is that crock pot might keep more nutrients than the pressure cooker Comment from : @gaborlegrady |
I would use BBQ and wood burning stoves/ovens Comment from : @georgevavoulis4758 |
I think pressure pot will use the least amount as foods cook faster under pressure Comment from : @georgevavoulis4758 |
Use a CONVECTION OVEN Comment from : @georgevavoulis4758 |
You did not compare like with like as two systems roasted with two steamed The Pressure cooker was always going to win I have used a pressure cooker for years and when used with gas its even more efficient It due ti increasing the level of heat and also once the level is obtained the pressure cooker does not allow the heat to escape so it only has to be maintained Comment from : @brianoliver521 |
I would have thought the IP would be the winner but thought the Crock-Pot would have been lots better than it was I use my toaster oven to warm up food or toast bread but will start using it more than the regular oven now Comment from : @ceepark114 |
In the instant pot, you kept the skins on Was it difficult to remove the skins? Plus did the squash lose a lot of flavor in the instant pot basically using a steam method? Comment from : @ayesh5544 |
Hi Hope and Larry! This is my first time here but it will not be my last One thing you left out of this review the taste? Was there much of a difference between the butternut pumpkins depending on the cooking method? brI remembered a dish I used to make around 30 years ago It used half of a small butternut pumpkin per person with the seeds and some flesh removed Sit it upright (as opposed to on its side) on a baking dish to cook Try to keep the skin intact as this will be the 'bowl' for the dish When the flesh is soft take it out of the oven; scoop out much of the flesh and mix with cooked rice, finely chopped onions, raisins, herbs of your choice and a small amount of stock You can turn that stock into a sauce with some wine if you like or just add gravy or even cheese to it You can add some cooked meat as well Put the filling back into the pumpkin and continue to cook until everything browns Voila!brAs my stove's oven no longer working (and I can't afford to replace it), I now use my air-fryer-oven (which is a rectangular metal oven, so not like most plastic, rounded air-fryers) for much of my cooking I have it on the 'oven' setting most of the time but it uses the high force of the air-fryer to make this into a highly fan-forced oven I have been a bit concerned about how much it costs to run and I can't do much baking in it as I could only cook about 6 muffins at a time, but it's effective for me for main meals as I live alone brI'm not sure that your tests were done equitably For the instant pot, you had a smaller area to fill due to its size AND you put a CUP OF WATER in the bottom Had you put a cup of water in the bottom of the pan for the other appliances I think that would have made some difference That one cup of water is enough to generate a lot of steam You would have needed to have put a lid (or aluminium foil, or another baking pan of the same size and used clips to keep the pans together- thus creating a type of dutch oven) on the dishes to get a snug fit just like you have with the instant pot brI generally microwave vegetables like this before putting them into the oven , so that also cuts down on cooking time and energy usage This shaves a bit more time off the cooking time in the main appliance Comment from : @loverlyme |
Those squash are dark orange, good looking fruit Comment from : @joeschmo7957 |
I replaced gas oven and microwave oven with a Ninja and do most of my cooking with it as it has a range of cooking options However I am used to pressure cooking and it is my favourite way of preparing most foods I was confident it was the most economical (and tastier) way Comment from : @nct948 |
Such a nice graph! I had to go back to study it better Thanks! Comment from : @christinearmington |
Wish your test had included both a microwave & air fryer I cook a lot in my microwave I try to use my oven as little as possible (we have an all electric home which means $$$$😬) I used to use a pressure cooker on my electric cooktop, but guess I need to use an Instant Pot instead Generally what I use depends on what I'm cooking & the space & time requirements of the utensil Comment from : @janeforever |
I'll say instapot Comment from : @tammybyrd1054 |
Clear as mud You need to show kWh kWh is the correct units for comparison of energy used (it is the unit you buy electricity with) kW is just an instance in time, kWh is total energy used As you state, the heating elements will switch on and off, you need to account for this in any calculation Comment from : @AORD72 |
The Microwave would win hands down, however, it depends on what texture you are seeking to achieve Comment from : @TulipB89 |
I only cook with an instapot It is amazing and very versatile The primary win for the instapot is that cooking is performed much faster Comment from : @im2yz4u17 |
Interesting test But if you look at the money saved, lets assume $ 016/kwh - you look at pennies Do that twice a day, you may save $ 500 a month Comment from : @hgk45874 |
German electronics developer here I bought an Instant Pot (from the UK) about two years ago They strangely enough are uncommon here In any case I fell in love with it quickly It is so much better than the german and french non-electronic pressure cookers we´ve used for decades On big thing: It´s really well insulated! The inner pot is heated up of course but that doesn´t take too much energy The outer shell stays cool though and that means that the majority of the heat actually goes into heating up the food and not the kitchen Try cooking short rib or frozen chicken for a chicken soup and take a look at your "Kill a watt" (how American) You´ll be surprised Comment from : @martinhildebrandt6284 |
One word: Gas Comment from : @sjsz06 |
Don't talk about it Just make a list !!! Comment from : @gilliantill1214 |
I vote the instant pot will use the least Comment from : @lizhumble9953 |
Pressure cooker always more energy efficient It's why big cannery's and large kitchens use the method Want the caramelization of the dry bake either finish with a light grill or a few minutes of high temp Crock pots are great for slow cooking cheap tough cuts of meat or slow braising meat that would be a pain on the stove Comment from : @geradkavanagh8240 |
Residual heat cooking is a great way to reduce energy use Comment from : @shermanhofacker4428 |
How about an Air Fryer? Comment from : @helenpomerleau6455 |
The scraps go to the chickens I make egg fried rice and omelettes from them Comment from : @geradkavanagh8240 |
Any appliance that uses electricity to heat is the most expensive way to cook Use a solar cooker and eat more raw foods Comment from : @RodgerMudd |
They aint squash They is Butternut Pumpkins (Sorry I'm Australian) Comment from : @geradkavanagh8240 |
This was very informative, thank you so much for sharing The result doesn't surprise me Of course will flavour play a roll in how we prepare our food, but with herbs and spices almost everything can be turned into a feast Comment from : @DutchJoan |
0ooo, don,t use any of them! currently trying methods on an electric double hob only with less or no fatinterested in your vid tho, great idea xx n Subscribed Comment from : @nancythomas-wardmba2993 |
I have an AEG instapot "pressure cooker" it has a "slow cooker" feature on it which is ideal for tough heavy cuts of meats, slow release stews/soups Best of both worlds and one less appliance laying around Breville counter top oven has convection fan option which i find (learned) cookers faster & you have to scale back the recommended temp setting 5 - 10 degrees or shorten the cooking time Amazing what you can cook in those mini ovensbrWall oven only gets used 2-3 times a year, actually turned off at the wall ( good hiding place for the chocolate cookies & treats no one ever looks in there)brWould be interested with a comparison between an electric fry pan vs stove top fry pan Comment from : @normandunckley3926 |
should also try the toaster oven in convection mode it should cut the energy usage 20-25 Comment from : @karlmorte5846 |
Since the Instapot is also a pressure cooker you use less heat at atmosphere It’s not really a surprise it uses less energy For me I would most often roost, make a pizza, make bread, etc with a toaster oven and really don’t see a use for an Instapot Comment from : @jlastre |
So happy because I use an instapot ! Very easy to slip into using and oven though at times so I will discipline myself No more oven for me ! Comment from : @sueg7174 |
I would wager the instapot to be most efficient since it is a pressure cooker Maybe the crockpot will win but idk, let's seebrbrWow, I thought the IP would win but not by such a wide margin The crockpot surprised me the most in how much energy it used Comment from : @Sb129 |
Oh wow! Love this experiment! Comment from : @baobao8459 |
Love your oven!! Looks to be from the 1950’s Has a digital clock How cool is that? Comment from : @kathywatt7555 |

I have loads of energy saving devices !!! I don't have a full sized Cooker !!! I have a small Electric Oven, 3 Induction Hobs !!!! I have Pie Makers, Multi Cookers, 3 Microwave Cookers, Wood Burning Stoves to use in the Garden, and a Solar Cooker !!!! But I now Use a lot of Tinned Food which is already Cooked I add Flavourings, eg 4 kg Middletons Chipotle Chilli and Lime !!! A tablespoon is just right so the Tubs last for years !!!! I try to use a Microwave Cooker for most stuff !!!! I would cook a Squash in the Microwave for half an hour Microwave and I would brown it in my Halogen Oven !!!! A small electric Oven will be on for 20 minutes in an hour !!!! The toaster oven does not turn down, it goes on and off like a Microwave !!!! If you use a full sized oven on your cooker the Cost is Horrific !!!! A pressure Cooker is Good because it's very fast, and used with an Induction Hob, or it's an Electric Pressure Cooker it will use hardly any Electricity once it has heated up !!!! Your large Cooker Oven is about 12 kilowatts so you can imagine what it would Cost to cook the Squash in that oven !!!! An electric Pie Maker is brilliant !!!! You can cook the Meat and Gravy in the Microwave and Cook the Pastry with the Pre Cooked Fillig !!!! And it will Cook in half an Hour !!!! Another brilliant device is a Rice Cooker !!!! Most Multi Cookers Cook Rice !!!! An induction hob tells you how much power it uses At 400 watts you can fry your bacon, eggs and fried eggs !!! And it switches on and off so it costs pennies to cook with !!!! Your electric ring on a full size cooker is 2, 500 watts so it Costs 6 times what the Induction Hob uses !!!! Comment from : @spaceted3977 |
Microwave uses the least energy Comment from : @suzann5312 |
Choose a recipe that doesn't require a lot of energy Comment from : @warrencurtis7442 |
Crock pots work more effectively with water in them because water maintains the heat and it uses less electricity With the instapot, I'd want my food coming out warm so it doesn't seem like a fair comparison Comment from : @Meskarune |
Here in the UK many of us now have smart meters that measure how much power you are using (gas/electricity or both together) brIt makes it relatively easy to work out which methods are most economical Comment from : @billswifejo |
You are one crazy lady! I love this! How fun But you know as a child I was traumatized from watching I Love Lucy when the pressure cooker exploded rice on the ceiling I also have 5 fish tanks running in our place which would shock the audience Making squash I would probably use my oven so I lost big time lol Your house kitchen looks so nice and cozy 😻 Comment from : @bookmouse2719 |
There is an other low electricity user appliance though you may never have seen one It was designed in Czechoslovakia in 1939 it is called a "Remoska" just worth having a look on the net The one thing you can be sure of is that it can do what ever an oven can do but better at a very low cost, in my experience it is that is true Comment from : @jas20per |
The slow cooker is Comment from : @meizheng8914 |
You kept saying kilowatt (KW) when I believe you meant kilowatt hour (KWH) The meter's image appears to be displaying KWH Kilowatt is the rate at which you are using power (like how fast [gallons/second] is the water flowing) Kilowatt hour is how much power have you used (like how many gallons of water have you used) Two more comparisons might be a stovetop pressure cooker or a thermal cooking bag / container Comment from : @wmsatic |
What about a Air Fryer Comment from : @jstewart3517 |
