hey avatar (and corridor digital) fans - that hand shot is both practical and CGI, as I mentioned in the video Here’s the receipt beforesandafterscom/2022/12/21/why-the-cg-water-in-the-way-of-water-looks-so-good/ Comment from : @impatrickt |

1:43 dont forget Johnny Depps voice acting performance for Rango Comment from : @derfacecrafter |
Cameron can actually see a low-poly render while he's filming with the actors, so he has an idea about what the final shot will look like Comment from : @Whatever94-i4u |
It's CGI, top tier CGI Comment from : @TheStOne1 |
What I noticed during watching the movie is their hands looks extra real Comment from : @EliasVexler |
Avatar 2 did it best so far, but I would say the beginnings of this started with Robert Zemeckis doing Polar Express, and especially Beowulf and A Christmas Carol which used mo-cap but painted over the actors and everything with CGI Look at the behind-the-scenes for those films and it's very similar to Avatar They're all basically animated films really I would say With AI I'm very hesitant as a film lover, but hope that technology would be used appropriately if filmmakers feel like it can help and not replace human creatives Comment from : @TalonsOfFire |
praising Avatar: 😃😃😃brpraising AI: 😡😡😡 Comment from : @RedCaio |
I guess im the minority here but Avatar looked like CGI to me especially the close up shots--understanding its performance capture I guess taints my view? Comment from : @kassieme |
I think nobody will criticize this work for its technical execution; It's so rich at times, it feels borderline exhausting I just think that the overall pacing is absolutely atrocious Comment from : @uninitializedvariable |
Didn’t they use performance capture in lord of the rings 20 years ago? Comment from : @steveschroth8847 |
b"It looks so damn real!"/bbrishows the most colorful shots that arent even possible in the real world/ibrlol Comment from : @fruehlingsobst8123 |
The Navi will always look like crap no matter how good the animation gets because they were designed with the limitations of 2009 CGI in mind Comment from : @MS-ii1sv |
Watching this video every clip you show looks super fake I'm not saying that he isn't pushing technology he's just pushing it too far too fast to look real Comment from : @MS-ii1sv |
That's my shot I did on 2nd Unit Comment from : @gwarren333 |
I thought the first looked terrible and was terrible, but this one was quite amazing visually Both were bad movies though Comment from : @hosoiarchives4858 |

Video GAMES DEVELOPERS SHOULD LEARN FROM JAMES Comment from : @gameplays03 |

Avatar 1 has had the best cgi up to this day, until avatar 2 came along!! Comment from : @Tobo226 |
Watched the movie yesterday (stopped 23min before the end because it got late) and that is probably an unpopular opinion, but I felt kinda creeped out It had such a strong uncanny valley feeling Also I didn't feel it improved that much Maybe it's just bad memory on my part tho (I watched Avatar 1 maybe 3 times over all the years)brMostly felt weird about the characters The background looked stunning tho Comment from : @izal4625 |
It doesn't Comment from : @sean7332 |
This movie does not look or feel real, the shit looks fully animated, the background for most of the movie is bland and doesn't smoothly transition with the characters or what's going on but everybody has there own opinion Comment from : @justinmundey7437 |
The CGI is great Too bad it's ruined by the immersion-shattering 48 fps Let's hope Cameron learns a lesson for the next film Comment from : @crasianator1986 |
if you think that shot looks real you should go get your eyes checked You're the reason why they keep making this garbage Sad just Sad Comment from : @jessicawinslet684 |
Unreal engine makes this kind of stuff very accessible right now Comment from : @shrimpinpat |
It doesn’t look real Comment from : @yoinch |
it does not look real, i started watching it and returned few days later it looked idioticly cartoon like Comment from : @MrKyly |
Did u see the video of them filming the scene? It was literally somebody’s arm painted blue lol Comment from : @outlawedpanther2527 |
If I had a dollar for every unoriginal fucker calling Avatar "alien pocahontas" I would have enough to budget another 10 Avatar films People see the film because it's an experience, not just a movie I watched the sequel yesterday and it truly felt like I was out of this world The story may not be ground-breaking but I was definitely entranced watching it and felt like I was in a different reality Comment from : @drown4994 |
Lmao so your telling me this scene had everone wondering if this is cgi or real lol Comment from : @SunlightInMyEyes |
What is CGI Comment from : @thebestandonlyone_s |
I wonder if James took inspiration from game technology Considering games have been doing performance capture for some 5-7 years now Comment from : @gtafan110010 |
Avatar looks CGI fake to me Mandalorian looks way more natural and what they did with unreal engine is phenomenal! This is way more convincing and i think this will be the future of film making, But the way that Denis Villneuve did with "Blade Runner 49" and "Dune" are true cinematographic masterpiece! Atmospherics, lighting, composition, blocking Comment from : @engpasev |
the cgi is so good in part because they didn't make their artists work under extreme pressure, deadlines and time crunches unlike some other companies (marvel) Comment from : @fandoe |
Avatar 2 was a blast on IMAX ! The visuals were so crazy Comment from : @senshai1267 |
I don't know if many people notice but (spoilers) after Kiri has a seizure, and is lying in the hut I could literally see the soft hair on her skin, like how we have tiny hair on our body It made me realize how MUCH detail is in this film Comment from : @05isabella |
People say go to theatres to watch movies, this is one insanely good example of it I was annoyed by the HFR and 3D glasses at first but once they got into the water, wow My brain was totally tricked and only a few times did I notice the CGI-ness of it all I thought uncanny valley would kick in but they captured the mouth movements so well and quite in-sync it was not off putting Kudos to the entire cast and crew on this outstanding achievement Comment from : @vancetamolang8494 |
in the near future, Hollywood doesn't need expensive actors anymore And the Oscar goes toCGI, Effects, motion Capture, aso Comment from : @MichaelJohnstone1970 |
People focus on the tech here a bit too much It's not only the tech that does the trick it's the consistency of this world that was created by real scientists, biologists, astronomers who worked years to build this imaginary planet Even if anyone who could now afford a RED could buy a performance capturing system like this, they would't be able to produce anytthing similar because a project like Avatar can't and will not be able to be realised without a multi hundred million dollar budget Even Cameron could only pull it off because he was able to threaten a powerful company like Fox because he already made them billions of dollars Comment from : @LeutnantSchrippe |

Watched it in imax 3d It was good, but most of it was based on visuals The story was lacking a bit wasn't much relatable, either Comment from : @Hindu_power_200 |
the feeling is the same, the technique and the thecnology is exciting and terrifying!! Comment from : @omatheusrufino |
Watched it in laser IMAX and I felt through most of it that I was THERE It was insanely realistic and IMMERSIVE! Comment from : @docliquidplays7989 |

I watched the movie in 4d, it was absolutely amazing I’d watch it again any day because it felt so real, especially with the 4d effects Comment from : @hybrid2031 |
When I saw this movie in theaters I thought that they filmed the movie on an alien world Comment from : @PelinalWhitestrake9147 |
The 3D experience was absolutely incredible, I only wish common LCD screens could reproduce the 3D used without the red and blue anaglyph 3D glasses but instead with polarizing 3D glasses Comment from : @norliasmith |
The term "performance capture" is spot on and supports the premise that talented actors are still required for this hybrid form of filming Great video Thanks for breaking it down Comment from : @PorscheMonster |
Love how you explained this 👏👏👏 also a question What camera do you use? Comment from : @sushimilover7370 |

Neteyam In kurdish is “not finished” as the Kurds are the people of mountains in Western Asia I think in one of the sequels he will return in some way in a mountain Na’vi village Comment from : @chroniclesofelmo4598 |

Wait until AI can create worlds by themselves it'll be more amazing than anything a human can think of Comment from : @nomaderic |
I'm glad that I'm not the only person the hand shot stuck out to All my fav visual effects are a combination of CG & practical Speaking of performance capture, you should do a vid on Shin Ultraman; a movie significantly cheaper than Avatar 2 lol Despite that, Shin Ultraman still had some incredible performance capture because all the characters done that way were either giant monsters or aliens with no, or almost no, facial expressions, but the body language the actors performed made each character distinct & really sold their performances Comment from : @BaldPerspective |
Actually it does NOTbrJust as with Jurassic Park - the first installment did make a major impactbrBut no sequel will ever achieve the same level of surprise, Sequel has to be a good movie, tech or no techbrTerminator 2 was an example of such sequel - Cameron's fortebrAvatar 2 unfortunately is nothing of the sortbrWhat impressed us all in the initial Avatar was a decent story made great with supertechnology - no visuals like that existed beforebrBUTbrANY technology is really impressive only once Comment from : @ArgueNaught |
it dosent look real, it looks like a computer game , lol and wtf Comment from : @c3arliie846 |
Still dislike 3d movies - still dislike 99 of hollywood movies The story telling has unquestionably gotten worse over time And CGI does more harm than good Comment from : @luitemedia |
I mean it's pretty much what we're used to in video games So seeing someone being awed that much by Cameron's creativity because it's not a real place/because it's virtual is pretty confusing to me because that's what video games have been doing for a while now so it's not revolutionary to film and motion capture for a completely virtual world I feel like it's a matter of a generation discovering its existence when it's been mainstream for the others generations' entertainment for a while now Pretty weird Comment from : @ChulipsChu |
They had to get permission from Nasa to make this movie Comment from : @tricky83 |
I hope film makers don't stop using real life locations CGI it ideal for creating fantasy environments like pandora but i hate the use of cgi because it's cheaper that shooting on location That never works for me as a viewer personally Great video patrick, thanks Comment from : @montybrewster7 |
Cameron can call it whatever he wants but it's still motion capture, not some 'performance' capture When Gollum was created all those 20 years ago, going through the same process, was it also 'performance' capture or motion capture Apes in Planet of the Apes; 'performance' or just motion capture What Cameron did here doesn't differ from the standard movie practices here That being said the rest of CGI is hella impressive but let's stop creaming ourselves over the fact that his actors were acting whilst wearing motion capture suits Comment from : @MovisFun |
Watched this immersive movie 2 times in IMAX 3D , I loved it ! Comment from : @TheKing-qu8cm |

the first of all, the Blue Monkey at Pandora Planet, has long tail Well, i am not sure why such intelligent type of Monkey has such Long Tail Which is so useless, and the blue Monkey is not using the Long Tail for their needs in their daily life The Long tail may contradict with generic understanding, like the type of Monkey, living on Ground, (if their life is on the ground level, on Earth) do not have such Long Tail What the main purpose (or idea) of the long tail, necessary for the blue monkey on Pandora? Comment from : @michelleendo3626 |

Whatch this movie about week ago and it’s so good Comment from : @PriMsWaRlorD |

James is like a coach helping their team at a game Comment from : @tajaunedmond910 |
Avatar 2 was trash Comment from : @ThisIsMeArnold |
This is an interesting take, I'm not at all hating, huuuuuge fan of this second film, but I didn't think it looked remotely real In fact that was the biggest improvement to me, that they removed a lot of the live action elements and accepted that it was an animated film It is by far the most beautiful animation of all time but I would absolutely classify the film as animation Comment from : @pepper4942 |
It's weird how people are acting like this is brand new Video games have been made like this for years already Comment from : @bionic1matt |
James Cameron and his team truly are freakin legends 😎 Comment from : @moalzaben5554 |
I LOVE that James Cameron said, this is my crazy idea and I'm gunna throw money at it and do it because I can He made it and made it well It feels like watching real art at the movies again Comment from : @rileyallen489 |

Did you watch it in imax ? I did and I regret waiting for imax The frame rate changing randomly 5 times a minute made me feel sick, not to mention how ugly it was brFelt like it’s the worst of both worldsbrI’ll have to watch it again but not in hfr and probably not in 3d Comment from : @definingslawek4731 |
CGI animation is an art form just like 2D animation & stop motion No matter the money & tools, talented & skilled artists are mandatory to create such visual master pieces on live-action-animation Comment from : @afrinaut3094 |
I found all the movements very fluid Let's be honest the story was below average Comment from : @pakaran23 |
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and helping us process how to make better films to tell stories James Cameron has enabled some great advancements in the film industry The results were better than Aquaman Comment from : @pbilk |
It’s weird that even with all the technology, I’d still prefer practical effects Or just very little computerized effects I know this horse has been beaten to death, but Lord of the Rings feels more real than any of this CGI in recent years I mean the first one and maybe second one more than the third lol No computer can beat real life I am WAY more invested that way Comment from : @HHHHEEELLLLOOOO1 |

I seriously don't think Avatar 2 looked that real I've been working with CGI for over a decade now, and honestly? The whole movie felt more cartoon-y compared to the original film The original film did a good job in fooling you into a sense of realism, while with the new movie, there was just so much obviously CGI stuff that it was kind of painful to watch, especially the glass in the movie? God they did so bad with the class Comment from : @InTheMindOfficial |
I walked out of this movie about 3/4 of the way through It was hollow and boring Comment from : @loomismeister |
