Avatar 2 did it best so far, but I would say the beginnings of this started with Robert Zemeckis doing Polar Express, and especially Beowulf and A Christmas Carol which used mo-cap but painted over the actors and everything with CGI Look at the behind-the-scenes for those films and it's very similar to Avatar They're all basically animated films really I would say With AI I'm very hesitant as a film lover, but hope that technology would be used appropriately if filmmakers feel like it can help and not replace human creatives

Watched the movie yesterday (stopped 23min before the end because it got late) and that is probably an unpopular opinion, but I felt kinda creeped out It had such a strong uncanny valley feeling Also I didn't feel it improved that much Maybe it's just bad memory on my part tho (I watched Avatar 1 maybe 3 times over all the years)brMostly felt weird about the characters The background looked stunning tho

If I had a dollar for every unoriginal fucker calling Avatar "alien pocahontas" I would have enough to budget another 10 Avatar films People see the film because it's an experience, not just a movie I watched the sequel yesterday and it truly felt like I was out of this world The story may not be ground-breaking but I was definitely entranced watching it and felt like I was in a different reality

Avatar looks CGI fake to me Mandalorian looks way more natural and what they did with unreal engine is phenomenal! This is way more convincing and i think this will be the future of film making, But the way that Denis Villneuve did with "Blade Runner 49" and "Dune" are true cinematographic masterpiece! I don't know if many people notice but (spoilers) after Kiri has a seizure, and is lying in the hut I could literally see the soft hair on her skin, like how we have tiny hair on our body It made me realize how MUCH detail is in this film

People say go to theatres to watch movies, this is one insanely good example of it I was annoyed by the HFR and 3D glasses at first but once they got into the water, wow My brain was totally tricked and only a few times did I notice the CGI-ness of it all I thought uncanny valley would kick in but they captured the mouth movements so well and quite in-sync it was not off putting Kudos to the entire cast and crew on this outstanding achievement

People focus on the tech here a bit too much It's not only the tech that does the trick it's the consistency of this world that was created by real scientists, biologists, astronomers who worked years to build this imaginary planet Even if anyone who could now afford a RED could buy a performance capturing system like this, they would't be able to produce anytthing similar because a project like Avatar can't and will not be able to be realised without a multi hundred million dollar budget Even Cameron could only pull it off because he was able to threaten a powerful company like Fox because he already made them billions of dollars

I'm glad that I'm not the only person the hand shot stuck out to All my fav visual effects are a combination of CG & practical Speaking of performance capture, you should do a vid on Shin Ultraman; a movie significantly cheaper than Avatar 2 lol Despite that, Shin Ultraman still had some incredible performance capture because all the characters done that way were either giant monsters or aliens with no, or almost no, facial expressions, but the body language the actors performed made each character distinct & really sold their performances

Cameron can call it whatever he wants but it's still motion capture, not some 'performance' capture When Gollum was created all those 20 years ago, going through the same process, was it also 'performance' capture or motion capture Apes in Planet of the Apes; 'performance' or just motion capture What Cameron did here doesn't differ from the standard movie practices here That being said the rest of CGI is hella impressive but let's stop creaming ourselves over the fact that his actors were acting whilst wearing motion capture suits

This is an interesting take, I'm not at all hating, huuuuuge fan of this second film, but I didn't think it looked remotely real In fact that was the biggest improvement to me, that they removed a lot of the live action elements and accepted that it was an animated film It is by far the most beautiful animation of all time but I would absolutely classify the film as animation
