The answer is a lot of inflation Movie theater attendance has been in decline Avatar did so well that it was possible it would be the highest grossing film for a few decades With no possible upcoming movies that will unseat it and the fact more and more people are choosing to stay home instead of going to the theaters, it would likely take a huge hike in ticket prices to unseat it
