I can't believe people make it so complex Here is the simple explanation - It's powered by the concept of **borrowing / lending**brbr- Sam has 10 stocks, he is bullish on it and holds itbr- John has 0 stocks, he is bearish on it and wants to bet on this (this is shorting)br- Other than traditional sell/buy orders, another form of transaction is supported by system - "borrowing/lending of stocks"br- John (borrower) borrows 10 stocks from Sam at an interest rate of 1 stock per day So if John returns after 3 days, John has to return 13 stocks This is the incentive for Sam (lender) to lendbr- However, since John (borrower) is bearish on the stock, he sells it immediately and gets the equivalent cash (assume 20$, with 2$ per stock) from the market He waits for 3 days, the price becomes half (1$ per stock) He buys 13 of those stocks with some (13$) of that same money and returns those 13 to Sam The remaining money (7$) is John's profit

For those who still have confusion on how we can sell a share that we are not even owningbr1 Understand this first : Example Adani Enterprises (AEL) Assume 10000 members holding AEL shares with Zerodha At least 20 of these shareholders are not going to sell their share today at once Just a Probability br2) Now I am a Short seller asking Zerodha to rent me a few shares by Morning 915 AM It's a good deal for Zerodha they rent me 100 shares from that safer 20 shareholders with some rent amount br3) Zerodha is a very strict Lender who collects those 100 shares by 315 PM and hands over to those 20 br4) You know those 20 don't even know that broker Zerodha lends their shares On that day if someone from that 20 wants to sell their AEL, Zerodha will shuffle shares from other Share holders Shares are fungable right !! br5) Whether I made a profit or loss Zerodha will always make a profit by renting out the shares !!! brHope it helps someone!
