From personal experience I needed to master the basics of the foreign language at home first, otherwise I wouldn't be able to make sense of anything when it came time for full immersion But yes, that full immersion is eventually crucial, making that foreign language binot/i/b foreign! I usualy call this "jumpstarting", I hardly ever get to speak english (even though it's my mother tongue) so I tend to stutter and forget words when speaking it to other mexicans, so when I'm sure I'm going to need it I kind of watch a movie or listen to music in english trying to jumpstart english in my brain It works like 90 of the time, but what really works is getting drunk, whenever I get drunk I can jump from spanish to french to english without a stutter Comment from : @Monkeywe |

This is an interesting application of context dependent learning brMy take-away is that yes, you might want to practice thinking about home etc, so you can get better at it, not not think about it In fact, practice many different settings so that your language isn't locked into once place Comment from : @6Uncles |

as someone who is fluent in english but who does not have it as a first language, i notice i tend to mimic the person i'm talking to, and the longer the conversation the more i adopt their way of speaking, so if i'm speaking with a british person i become more and more british, but as soon as some german starts speaking english to me i feel my accent become more and more choppy the same with spanish as well, i am still learning the language but i noticed as soon as i came home from a language trip to spain, maintaining the language became much more challenging learning languages is hard Comment from : @marapprech |
|

i can't take part in the cultural immersion debate since i didn't learn english by living in another country; however, i do think that i'd boost my overall skills by settling in one moreover, everytime i watch a seeker video i end up being frustrated because the anchors speak way TOO fast and my listening comprehension just can't catch up with everything they say i even lower the video's speed i guess i'll keep trying!!! Comment from : @jamilmoscoso6776 |
|
True in my experience I cannot speak Spanish with an American even though we are both fluent in Spanish I always thought it was because I became more self-conscious of my language and any mistakes I made, but maybe it's just association or a combination of both Comment from : @elisatorrescuapio5957 |

Last school year, I was in my 3rd year of French, and I was in my 1st year of German The teacher for the German classes was also a French teacher, and lived in France for a period of time Therefore leading to her having a bunch of French stuff in the classroom as well as German When I was in German, I would constantly switch to French due to the fact that I would see the French things in the classroom Comment from : @Katt1848 |

This true! When I was living in Ecuador as a Peace Corps Volunteer, I became fluent in Spanish because I was fully integrated in the community for over two years I was hardly speaking English nor was I hanging out with English speakers most of the time Also, I meet immigrants all the time in the US and the ones that come as adults and stick with their immigrant communities are not fluent in English even if they've lived in the states for several years Learning a language takes two things-- the will and the immersion That is the recipe! I hope to be trilingual one day Comment from : @jessicathedancer1 |

culture really matters when you learn the language, in Chinese there exist many words with extra meanings and feelings When people write some sentences with "autumn" and "fallen leaves", they usually means "upset", because it's the way those poets in history expressed their feelings "White hair" means "sad", "snow in June" means "Injustice","Red beans" means love, there's a word"green fat red skinny" means a girl would look more skinny in red dress Comment from : @John5mith |
