utterly amazing - great sequence when Sunderland players taking shots at goal quickfire ; none of this poncing around looking for a pen - also kudos to them for still going for it late in game -not holding ball up at corner flag (am not sure when that became a time wasting tactic ?) Comment from : @IndieVolken |
Liked the way Sunderland didn't time waste near end and still kept going forward Comment from : @glenmorgan4597 |
Truly glorious Never been a bigger save at an FA cup final, surely What a team effort: Montgomery, Watson, Kerr, Porterfield, Hughes and Hallam What we'd give for some of that Stokoe inspiration now I wonder if KLD has ever even watched this game all the way through? If he does, he'll get a true, unfiltered illustration of the ethic and strength of the club and the city Ha'way! Comment from : @joshp9452 |
The joy of Bob Stokoe dancing on the pitch at the end and embracing Montgomery is one of the most special moments in football as far as im concerned Comment from : @gmf121266 |

Possibly the greatest cup final of all time Those last ten minutes seemed like an eternity For those heroes of Sunderland, unimaginable torture But they ran and chased down every ball Unforgettable Comment from : @Jefferson1969-u4s |

Leeds were the best team of their time 1968 1975 before Don Revie left to manage England & just didn't win enough if their finals though were centenary winners the year before against Arsenal, the 1971 Cup winners In those days, the game was still a fast passing game but it was always an inspirational moment, that one goal that stood out to winbrArsenal's 1971 win, Charlie George's 20 yarder, Leeds Utd win 1972 Alan Clarke's diving header & of course, Sunderland's Ian Porterfield's 1/2 volley, plus that ridiculous save by Jim Montgomery that made the finals what they were, unpredictable, entertaining & memorable Bobby Stokes run to Jim just about summed everything up with this game as Sunderland had beaten Arsenal in the Semis to after a reply, it was their trophy 🏆 that year, who could've wrenched it away Brilliant 😂 Comment from : @GosWardHen98 |
Sunderland looked pretty good Leeds should have won according to the chances, but Sunderland were not out-classed and they played with confidence, and they kept doing the right things Comment from : @KevTheImpaler |

How did Leeds not have two penalties awarded to them? That trip on Bremner was so clear even a blind man could see and the trip on Clarke was as bad Leeds would have won but fir very poor refereeing Comment from : @edmundpower1250 |

Incredible - 50 years ago brbrRemember the whole day and the match very well brbrEvery football fan who wasn't a Leeds supporter hated them in those days so it was a special moment Jim Montgomery's save and Bob Stokoe's jig perfectly summed up the feelings of the day as Leeds were also the holders brbrA reminder of how short life really is and to make the most of it all because its gone in the blink of an eye Comment from : @Seansaighdeoir |
Leeds should have won it Comment from : @paulyeomans850 |

Great seeing this againBrian Moore - commentating legendJimmy Hill - blind as a bat, God rest him! How on Earth could he not have seen that Leeds effort (3 minutes into the vid) hitting the bar did not cross the line?!! Also, how could he have missed the fact that Montgomery saved it?! Was eyesight that bad in the 70s?!! I'm joking of coursemagnificent double save from Monty and an unforgettable day for Second Division Sunderland Comment from : @anthonybailey1966 |

Still to this day can't believe Jim Montgomery kept out Lorimers shot Most telling reaction is that of Mick Jones who raises his arms in celebration as soon as Lorimer let's fly Magnificent reaction save Whilst remembered as a great underdog story this was a pretty good Sunderland team in the making Comment from : @paulbradshaw303 |

I was 7 years old when this came on tv on that overcast day in May 73, and watched in disgust as the mighty Leeds got a lesson in football, and learning about the underdog as my mum picked Sunderland and was right, but for me the worse was to come three years later Comment from : @pisceansith6915 |

Brian Moore was by far the best football commentator this country produced, worth watching for that alone That Montgomery second save is on a par with Banksy's save against Pele, Lorimer had the goal at his mercy and not only did he get his hand to it but actually kept it out Brother was a Leeds fan so got a lifetime of millage out of that result Comment from : @quotemenot7520 |
Fantastic! So great for those long-suffering fans Proper football Stokoe running to Montgomery Salt of the earth people Watson immense in that game but an admirable team effort for a gaffer who galvanised them History right there Comment from : @1101grayzer |
