Comments DEAD MALL - Red Bird Mall (Southwest Center Mall) - Dallas, TX

@KWMc1952
I quit going to that mall in late seventies/early eighties, can't remember exactly, when a young child went in the men's restroom alone and a man already in there did a number on the kid's penis with a knife After that happened, my son would always get mad at me when he was young and I made him go to the women's restroom with me Finally moved FAR away from that area They did surgery on the kid and he recovered physically They gave that mall a nick-name for a reason That's my memory of Red Bird Mall

Comment from : @ChristiRich

@yellowRose806
I grew up in Mesquite in the 90s and I never heard of this mall I've almost forgotten about Big Town Mall since Town East was the new mall I was aware of the other malls in Dallas just not Red Bird
Comment from : @yellowRose806

@ericmorrow3155
Use to go to this mall in the eighties and early nineties Loved this mall because it was such a huge part of my childhood Many quarters spent in the arcade If I wasn’t at this mall or it’s movie theaters I was at Redbird Skateland My last visit to that mall in the late nineties, I got jumped and robbed in the mall’s bathroom Mall security acted like it wasn’t a big deal Needless to say I never went back after that
Comment from : @ericmorrow3155

@sxaglife_
As you can see, the red bird mall is about to expand and the abandoned sears turned into hospital, and idk about formers of Dillards but they are starting an expansion

Soooo many good memories here from the 80’s - B Dalton, Orange Julius, Sanger Harris, Wyatts, the smell of the cigar shop and there was an awesome arcade too at one point - thanks for posting!
Comment from : @deann6256

@bobjenkins9736
People have to understand that when these malls are built that access is always great It's when city planners in the name of progress kill access making it difficult to access High rents with difficult access and you get an Amazon warehouse
Comment from : @bobjenkins9736

@mekon1971
You need to do an update sometime, this old mall has seen a lot of changes, Upscale medical and apartments/condos just to name a few
Comment from : @mekon1971

@lordmichaelnolan3993
I live in Dallas since 2016 and only been to this mall twice
Comment from : @lordmichaelnolan3993

@kevinrichards3288
The internet & the pandemic are what killed most of the malls
Comment from : @kevinrichards3288

Comment from : @MarquosXoloVanda

@dvferyance
I find it funny reading comments about dead malls they act like every mall is like this one When really there are lots of malls in the Dallas area that are far from it
Comment from : @dvferyance

@MrGabrielAngelGoldenBurton6
I will invest in this property in the future With no questions asked Great idea coming soon!
Comment from : @MrGabrielAngelGoldenBurton6

@chronoplex89
What would help red bird mall is putting a Dave & Busters inside
Comment from : @chronoplex89

Comment from : @Tristin471

@nebuloushammer8773
I live within 5 minutes There was never a reason for me to go to this mall There is no movie theater I feel like the last movie I saw here was Wayne's World Hate having to go to downtown or Cedar Hill to see a movie It's a good location, hopefully the redevelopment gets momentum
Comment from : @nebuloushammer8773

@evolutiontrading9884

@NaturalBeauty214
I remember going to this mall all the time as a kid and teen It was known as the rough mall and you had to be on the lookout when you went because the crowds could be rough at times They had a lot of unique stores and I remember at one point there was a corn dog stand that sold delicious smelling corn dogs I also remember when JC Penny, Dillard's and Sears were open and when it was Montgomery Ward before it was Burlington, and Foleys before it was Macy's I also remember that Ballys gym that was on the feeder road and the Grandys and does anyone remember when Mervyns used to be across the street next to Toys R US? This video brings sooo many memories back I no longer live in Oak Cliff and haven't for about 7 years now so this is very nostalgic for me Thanks for the video!
Comment from : @NaturalBeauty214

@gregd4633
A mall will NEVER survive without the stores I’m going to list Foot Locker, Champs, Upscale clothing stores like Neiman Marcus or Macy’s or Belk’s if you live in the southeast Kids Foot Locker, Bath Body And Beyond, H&M, Jazzy and Finish Line If the mall is missing any of the stores I listed it would be dead in a year point blank end of discussion Because other stores besides the ones I listed doesn’t have enough traffic or will attract people to shop there and the stores that remain the people who shop at stores other than the ones I listed doesn’t spend money on merchandise or high quality retail
Comment from : @gregd4633

@cassieyounqq5752
I use to always go to this mall It stayed packed and all the stores were open Over the years mostly all the stores closed The food court wasn't like it use to be I haven't been back in awhile
Comment from : @cassieyounqq5752

@jmcgirl8613
There was a shooting today smh
Comment from : @jmcgirl8613

@Dulce-mc3cn
It was a pretty shitty mall
Comment from : @Dulce-mc3cn

@vicksanchez6376
It’s eerie that this mall has a remaining anchor, that’s a Burlington Coat Factory it’s just like Summer Grove Mall formally the South Park Mall in Shreveport
Comment from : @vicksanchez6376

@uts4448
I am here from Facebook Somebody posted “I want my man to hold on to me like Oakcliff holding on to Redbird Mall” I can see why lol

Comment from : @erwhyamihere4571

@NeurogeneratedGuitar

@venom74799
I worked at the EB that used to be in redbird in the 90s I can’t believe the cookie station is still there
Comment from : @venom74799

@unklejohn8575
You should find out about the metal fountain that was in the brochure When I was a kid, it was located at the ground floor that went up to the second floor through that giant hole I remember the design was suppose to be a stylized “R” for “Red Bird” Sometime in the 90s it was removed and planted in a parking lot island on the NW side of the mall property (over by ShowbizI mean Chucky Cheese) Also, that awesome tile artwork in the old Sanger Harris (Foleys) store front is one of the last remaining pieces that used to adorn a bunch of malls around DFW There’s an article online about the artist of the tile mosaic
Comment from : @unklejohn8575

@jeffbarnes54
All you had to say was Southwest that sums this place up Yikes
Comment from : @jeffbarnes54

@cameronwillis2567
What’s the opening song?
Comment from : @cameronwillis2567

@Idelia412
I wouldn't call Burlington Coast Factory a thriving anchor Unless they plan different on this remodel, it is like pouring money down a rat hole
Comment from : @Idelia412

@Cerstani
In case anyone's wondering, the song at the end of the video is Dan Mason ダン·メイソン - Now Or Never (You And Me)
Comment from : @Cerstani

@TheRealJLPTX
I remember this mall back in the 80s and 90s This mall made such a strong impression on me as an 80s kid I still remember it used to be exciting to go to, was safe, and was always busy Those floors bring back memories though Wow!brbrI also remember when it started to get rough After a while, no one wanted to go because of the high crime and lack of diverse storesbrbrGlad to hear it's getting renovated and going back to its roots! I hope they restore it vs stripping the design and giving it the bland personality/taupe treatment That would be awesome!
Comment from : @TheRealJLPTX

@transitdude3352
What’s renovation gonna do especially when companies are going out of business I do a lot of shopping online because it’s convenient No trekking in bad weather anymore No grumpy salespersons anymore No mall security gaurds on your back all the time Apparently millions of shoppers feel the same way
Comment from : @transitdude3352

@news89
Omg the neon, dark brown floors and all the wood tones looks awesome Also sprial steps add some nice feature to the mall
Comment from : @news89

@dickkickem
ive lived in dallas since i was born (20 yrs ago) and had no idea this mall even existed
Comment from : @dickkickem

@bradreid2388
Very good research about the mall’s history The defunct department store Titche’s is pronounced “Thai-chez” with emphasis on the first syllable Their former headquarters and flagship store is now a residential loft conversion in downtown Dallas, 1900 Elm Their original flagship is the Wilson Building at Main and Ervay
Comment from : @bradreid2388

@LajitasRain
Spent many hours at Red Bird Mall back in the 70's & 80's

Comment from : @RayOutThere

@wowhaha4871
The former Burlington was originally a Montgomery Ward that opened as the 5th anchor in the 90s It closed with the chain in 2001 and became Burlington a few years later
Comment from : @wowhaha4871

@wowhaha4871
Yea the DFW has 2 malls that are on the brink of closure (including Red Bird), 2 that are in limbo zone, but 10 are either thriving or doing well
