Oceania isn't a continent, it's a region They have little tectonic relation and do not fit the definition collectively in any way We just don't want to leave people out and we use the term continent for political purposes more than we do geographic purposes in this day and age

I remember seeing my country Australia surrounded by ocean on many maps throughout my life, I'm 32 and have only recently as of last year seen Papua New Guinea above us on maps, that was never the case for me We were further down and NZ was closer in and up higher and it was the closest country to us as we were isolated with NZ Australia has changed a lot compared to how it was originally for me We never had an "Australian Bight" or those splits in SA at the bottom there Tassie was smaller and didn't have islands above it The states are different sizes now so width and length has changed The Great Barrier Reef was in Coffs Harbor NSW for me and not on the outskirts of QLD

Okay, as an autist with a geographic special interest, I can immediately say that Australia is the only country in the continent of Australia All of those others are in the REGION of Oceania A continent is a single landmass and the rest of those are all islands (yes I count Eurasia as a continent, fight me There's even arguments to be made for Afro-Eurasia)
