I own a small plumbing company I do about a million a year in revenue I grew the business slowly as I took the safe / conservative approach In the beginning I didn’t make that much but I always provided honest quality work I now have around 10k clients and I really pick and choose who I want to work for Just yesterday I got a an emergency call and with my skills and experience I was able to make $1700 in 5 hours Not bad for a plumber brThis isn’t an easy trade however I did work my ass off to get here and almost got divorced every other full moon But if you work hard and do good honest work you will do well brAlso don’t count your chickens before they hatch! Thought I'd mention that in the electrician trade, you really don't need to know a great deal about wires and circuit breakers to get your journeyman's license, it's 99 only code Supposedly the correct legal way of doing things I suspect plumbing is the same way All the license says is, you've become educated in the codes, and not that you're a master of the craft, although most people usually are anyway A welding certification is the same way A certification is not a license that says, you're an expert, it's only an informal skill test when you apply for a job Comment from : @JIm-w1b |

This is my husband's account I'm responding under, because it's logged in Anyways, I'm a homeschooling mom, and my youngest graduates in five years I'm prior Army I have an Elementary education degree, but I don't want to be a teacher when I finish homeschooling my children I'm familiar with power tools, because we've built things like playhouses and forts for our kids I'm not afraid of hard labor I just got done mowing our land with our zero turn mower Three of our closets I've retrofitted with 2x4's to make them more efficient I hate being bored; I love staying busy I'll be 51 when my last child graduates What line of work / job do you honestly think I could be hired on in the trades? Are they hiring women? Comment from : @mattmitchell7350 |
|
Little secret, Insulation makes the most money in constructionwhile all trades have to invest in different tools and materials Insulation is simple to install requires the bare minimum of tools and it's usually the same material per job Inspection is a piece of cake And installation doesn't have to impress anyone because it gets covered by drywall And because most people hate working with fiberglass it's a well paid item Comment from : @gilperaza4832 |

One good piece of advice it to choose a trade that can't be exported to china, I say this as a Machinist because a lot of good guys have lost jobs to foreign competition If you are good at math become an electrician that will never be exported Comment from : @matthewdonoghue321 |

I'm gonna put in a word for HVAC I wish I'd gone into that when I was younger There's a bright future in it, because everyone needs it and in the energy-constricted, hotter, future there will be a LOT of need for those who understand passive heating and cooling It's an interesting field! Pick something you think you might enjoy, work for next to nothing at first, show up on time, agree to work late or weird hours, be willing to travel, do your best work, ask questions of those with more experience until they're sick of you, build your network (including office people, especially those in sales), don't bad-mouth other people's work, acquire the various state licensing and keep a smile on your face brbr/ 38 years in commercial electronics (1986 to 1998 as an employee), self-employed since Comment from : @SADFORIAN |

If you're not working for yourself it frankly doesn't matter 😬 I'm self-employed and I try and pay people very well when I do higher them to work for me But having someone in between you and your money Its a lot easier to collect a check but your hourly goes up a lot when you start gambling on yourself Comment from : @matt45540 |
|
Real simple, the licensed trades make the most Limit the number of people in a trade, make the licensing a pita, and voila, high pay I had a career as a carpenter, would have made twice the money as a plumber At that time, carpenters were not licensed Comment from : @KathyAndrew |

What has ruined the wages in the USA is massive illegal immigration The wealthy folks who run our country and it's border policy are net service purchasers Not net service providers They do what is best for themselves and their peers financially at the expense of the deplorables and the trades people And that means flooding the work market, the available housing and rent market, and the consumable goods market with millions and millions of cheap competitors These folks often begin rich But in the end get much richer still by lower their costs in labor for the services they enjoy Comment from : @endoalley680 |
