The purpose of the US tariffs is to induce American and foreign companies to leave China as a manufacturing hub and move them to other countries such as Asean or India thus weakening the Chinese economy What the Americans did not foresee is the fact that China is increasingly becoming the de facto world market for any goods and services and China gradually will not need the US market anymore

All the parts that are used to manufacture stuff in the US are imported from China and other countries The parts are imported to the US and assembled in the US, so when the parts for these imports go up the price of these manufactured goods go up This contributes to inflation In addition, you have high labor costs in the US which makes the price of manufactured goods even more expensive Chump really screwed up the US economy, yet you have a lot of American idiots who believe he was the best president ever when he actually did a lot of long term damage on the US economy
