Isn’t it curious how many of the world’s greatest photographers never knew of half of this, and instead told great and timeless stories with the simple equipment they had available? Comment from : @MrMonta77 |
It's a bit silly to judge the dynamic range of the cameras of off a shot in which the sky had been underexposed by as much as two whole stops As well as looking at video that's overexposed by nearly two stopsbrbrThat being said I enjoyed your mire in depth analysis of the work flow - I truly hate the play/review button being on the right ok the 6d,; almost as much as ai hate change in buttons on the top from 5d mark I to Ii The mark I has the supreme workflow It's a shame the af and resolution isn't higher Looking to get the 6d but I don't know Comment from : @TheDavveponken |
Not good 6d m11 fine camera Comment from : @shermohd2607 |

Sounds like canon is paying you to do this video dude Comment from : @tell_it_like_it_is1187 |

Nice review, but a couple of point if I may br If it had all of the features of the 5, there would be no need produce the 5 The 6D is a low price(relatively), entry level full frame that is a revelation for anyone stepping up from APS-C, and is in fact used by a number of "pros"br To criticise it for lacking features of the 5D is like criticising the 5D for not being the equal of the 1D All are very good cameras, that meet their design criteriabr I love my 6D, but accept its short comings, many of which you have pointed out A couple that you missed is that it is impossible to rapidly change exp' comp for heavily backlit subjects in AP or TV modes It is also easy to hit the live view button with your forehead when composing a shot As you said, more, and more spread out focus points would be nicebr Overall it is a great camera If you are stepping up from something in the Rebel range you will be blown away! br Now that it has been superseded, you can pick up a low shutter count 6D for about the same money or less than a new entry level aps-c camera br Personally, I was happy to trade many of the extra features of my 7D for the much better image quality, and lighter weight of the 6D Comment from : @mcmoose64 |
Nice review Thanks Comment from : @jugurtha7800 |
can I use canon 6d with profoto? Comment from : @microdoulo2250 |
its April 2017 right now Should i get a 5D mk3 now or wait for the 6D mk2? Comment from : @horacecarter2081 |
The focus system blows on the 6d Comment from : @Ratio_Clips |
What can you say about shutter durability on 6d vs 5d3 Comment from : @kamillo0606 |
Although the 6D does NOT have a flip out articulating screen the WiFi capability means you can use your phone as a screen for low-level shooting & "Selfie" videos Comment from : @leehargreaves7473 |
Hi Dan, for me very good video I have 7DM2 and 6D This moment I think or not to change the 6D on 5DM3 or 5Ds I'm not professional photographer but I like do it pictures architecture and animal's 7DM2 is perfect for running photo's 6D of 5DM3 (5Ds) What would you advised? Comment from : @wojslawrubisz |
moron 6d all way! Comment from : @kostikoff |
I came from film to a used 5D Mark I several years ago I really like the digital I don't use live view since I never had it and nearly always use only the center focus square The SD cards have become more accessible and less expensive than the compact flash The only thing I am looking for now is higher ISO settings This review is helpful with some details I am leaning toward the 6D to save over $1000 Thank You! Comment from : @solarsynapse |
Very well done One can tell the presenter is quite knowledgeable and the information given is very helpful One suggestion, considering novices like myself, is, when presenting stills of the two different cameras, having some way to identify which camera is which I was unable to tell which was which Perhaps others, more familiar with these two cameras, did not have this problem Comment from : @stephenbamford |
What was it filmed with? Comment from : @ein99999 |
Hi, I'm a documentary photography student and I'm looking for an upgrade I've nailed it down to either one of these, so this video really helped brI'm just wondering what your suggestion is on which one to pick? I'd be taking photos of people, communities, landscapes, general documentary shooting brThanks Comment from : @PearlT92 |
Hi Dan, great video Which camera would you recommend for fashion/style blog brI am looking for crisp pictures Also planning on getting the 50mm 12 I have the 50mm 14 and it is way soft and dreamy HATE IT! Pictures are so blurry if you are more than 10 feet away Auto focus is slow as well Please advice Atena Comment from : @TheSabathea |
I know we're all diferent and have diferent needs but the 6d is in my opinion the best body ever made by Canon in almost every regard, IF you're in the market for a portable full frame general use body It's the best price / quality relation for me I've been using it for almost 6 months now and I love it (Used to own a 5Dmk2 before)brIf you're a professional, I can see why you would need the 5dmk3 but for a general use, landscape, astrophotography, etc the 6D is an amazing body for the price Comment from : @HelderP1337 |
I find the Canon EOS 6D to be perfectly fine for professional photography and I've been working professionally for nearly 20 years now ( I even still shoot 35mm in addition to using my Canon EOS 6D) These "superior" features of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III are negligible And it seems that most videos I see reviewing/comparing these two cameras completely neglect to mention that the actual LENSES are a more important investment than the digital camera body In fact I still think that my 35mm images look better than what I've shot on my 6d or even the 5D Mark 3 Wish more people would talk about that instead of just the camera body's specs Comment from : @Elayzee |
I prefer sharpness in my images I chose the 6D over the Mark III because of that Comment from : @Atouk |
I've shot with my t3i for over 4 years and have never had an SD card fail or become corrupt Comment from : @Atouk |
Damn I hate when I hear "Ny-kon" instead of "Nikon" (Nick-on) Comment from : @mal_p88 |
I'm in the market for full frame (upgrading from a lowly little 1100D) and my research over the last month has told me this: If you have to ask if you should buy the 6D or the 5dii/5diii, get the 6D Comment from : @joshuagates7146 |
Thanks for this !! Comment from : @missychrissssy |
you should do more research regarding the video quality, you didn't test against moiré and aliasing, the mk3 has an anti-aliasing filter, therefore it isn't as sharp which is a godd thing The 6d maybe has a sharper image but in quality, it is way behind the mk3 Comment from : @freeridediablo2 |
to much talking, boring do something! Comment from : @husainyzs |
are the 11 AF points on the 6d really an issue for portrait photography or other static subjects? Comment from : @JoelThorpe |
LearningCamerascom Hey i've a budget of 3700$ My initial plan was 5dmk iii & 70-200 28 is ii but now im short on the budget I do mainly wedding photography so do u suggest to get 5dmk iii body and wait for the lens or get 6d and the lens along with it? Please do let me know Thanks a lot :D Comment from : @atharali2653 |
i am in the market for 5Diii or 6D bri do general photography " a little from each aspect of photography " is the focusing and the dual card enough to justify the price ???brthanks Comment from : @drawab1 |
I feel that in this comparison test you almost completely ignore the greatest feature of the 6D, and that is the price! Sure, if you are a big budget pro, you're going to go for the 5D and have all those bells and whistles For me, most of those features mean nothing I'm more interested in the fact that the 6D gives me beautiful full frame images and a whole lot of cash left in my pocket to buy more quality lenses Comment from : @johncarey7786 |
I think its funny how people complain about the 6d compared to the 5d3 Only a thousand dollar difference? that is a lot of difference in cost :) 6d is a nice camera for its price point I find Comment from : @Thalestin |
Hi do you know if Canon will release a new firmware to have a clean HDMI output as done for the 5D ? Comment from : @jeep69628 |
Can you share some of your custom settings on the 5D3 (set button, preview button, rear focus, etc) Thanks in advance! Comment from : @joelcharbonnet7183 |
Hello I shoot with a Canon 1Ds Mark II still I desperately need to upgrade to get away from the grain in my shadows even at 100 ISO I know I am going in a somewhat backwards direction by not upgrading to the Canon 1Dx However, I can't bring myself to pay $6K for this camera when the 5D Mark III will work perfectly! However, I am getting mixed reviews on the 6D as well Which camera would you recommend as the best upgrade for me I already have amazing glass I am just wondering if the extra $1K will make a difference although after watching your review I am not too thrilled about the focus on the 6D I feel like I would be downgrading Comment from : @dawngela7408 |
u dont need a white balance button when u shooting in RAW files;) JPG is usuless Comment from : @punisher5320 |
Moneywise, the simple fact that the Canon 6D is compared to a 5D Mark III convince me to get the 6D It's now 1300€ for the body, which is a bargain for a full frame Comment from : @bricetrophardy |
To my mind the best benefit from built-in flash is its ability to fire off-camera flash The speedlite 90EX does that for a lot less than the ST-E2 Its sole disadvantage is that it doesn't do high-speed synchbrI have one, it's tiny and it works well Comment from : @mandurahchess |
Thank you so much for your reply back I really love your videos and tutorials lots of knowledge and is great and I do like the 70 D I know the 6D Is full frame has better picture quality but my daughter plays volleyball so the 70 D will work thank you If you have any more suggestions I do appreciate thank you Comment from : @loucoffee |
Learningcameras I am a beginners photographer looking to buy my first camera I want to go with Canon but I'm torn between the 70 D and the 6D my budget is around 2000 what do you think? Comment from : @loucoffee |
I own the 6D and have for 9 monthsI'm selling to upgrade to the 5d3 The AF is just god awful And let's face it the focus totally makes or breaks an image 5d3 all the way Comment from : @jflsdknf |
Excellent review Was wondering since you had brought in Nikon D600 of its dynamic range, how would you rate the video quality and dynamic range of the D800? Thanks so much anyways Comment from : @naminnooman |
I have a startup photography business, and I'm currently working with a Canon 600D, starting to really see the inferiority to a pro DSLRbrbrWhich of these 2 should I get? Or do you maybe have a different suggestion?brbrDoing a wide range of shoots, from studio to wedding to kiddies parties Thanks :) Comment from : @1994SuperKev |
learningcameras I am upgrading from a T3i, I take photos as a hobby, should i get the 6D and have money for lenses, or get a 5D MKIII with just the kit? Comment from : @jjsadler5085 |
None of us filmakers use the audio that we record on a DSLR We record externally Comment from : @ClarkTaylorM |
Built in flash ARE shit, agreed Nikons show the lens with its flash, so its useless Comment from : @truthkeeperfilms |
well, I think were paying less for the 6D if the 6D had the same feature set as the 5D mark III, what will happen to the 5D mark III sales? Comment from : @spencermanzondoorsXD |
Good reviewand I don't know if this point's been made down in the earlier commentsbut I have to say I think you didn't touch on the price point enough I picked the 6D because I had to weigh the price difference against image quality (my main concern), especially low-light quality Would I take a 5D3? Without a doubt But not at a body-only price higher than even the 6D WITH a 24-105L Comment from : @TremaynePrice |
go check TheCameraStoreTV's channel for 5dIII vs d800 for better comparison Comment from : @sayagendutsekali |
Very Good thanks Love info on Shadow handling Comment from : @lightmatrix16 |
canon 6d VS Nikon D600 which one better? Comment from : @Rajin2918 |
Great Vid! Comment from : @DronieUp |
what is more better camera if i want to take a pict of kids (an active ones, expecially for babys)? thank you Comment from : @rosaoktavia5302 |
In image quality, the 6D is great and produces just like the 5D Mark III Feature wise though, it is more like a rebel camera and build and controls are below the 5D Mark II And the AF, while still better (barely) than the 5D Mark II should never be allowed because everyone hated the 5D Mark II for it's AF system and that was 4 years ago The fact that EVERY new Canon camera has better AF than the 6D except the T5i is sad Also, the Nikon D600/610 packs features/build the 6D should have had Comment from : @learningcameras |
It sure could but I also noticed more moiré and aliasing on the 6D so there is a good chance the 5D3 has a stronger filter making it not quite as sharp but allowing it to not suffer from moire much at all Comment from : @learningcameras |
It is not all magnesium alloy so not like the 7D or 5D but an upgrade from the Rebel cameras It has some sealing but not to the level of the 7D or 5D I have never tested it to the extreme but it should withstand some beating, but is not weather proof
Comment from : @learningcameras |
Hi, does Canon 6D using Magnesium Alloy body like 7D and 5D? Is it weather proof (for extreem weather below 0 degree Celcius) and dust proof? Thank's Comment from : @andiwhie |
Could the in-camera processing explain why the 6D has considerably more sharpness than the 5D3? It would be nice to have both video settings flat and use post processing to add sharpness to them and compare :) Comment from : @Bluie182 |
the difference is actually, 1500 as of today, pretty big difference if you ask me Comment from : @guachito33 |
true, he says at the end there is no reason for anybody to pick the 6D and I think this is a pretty bold statement, the difference in price is considerable around 1600 dollars for the body only, good review but I think he forgot to take price into consideration, he sounded like they were both in the same price range, which of course it would be a no brainer Comment from : @guachito33 |
as a motion guy, that extra "no moire in video without add on alias filter" and "headphone jack slot" feature on 5D3 worth much While another extra "still" feature such as extra AF point etc doesn't really works for me since it doesn't do anything in video mode Comment from : @PontiRamanta |
Your video is titled 6D vs 5D Mark III, yet half the time you are comparing these two cameras to Nikons I've shot with Nikon and Canon, and from first hand experience, Canons are better with "pushing shadows" Comment from : @akhany |
Nice review, but I'd love to hear your views on the moire and aliasing issues the 6D has Tough to make a verdict on the video quality without having looked at those Comment from : @N199UA |
I own a Nikon D800, I have issues with the shadows on mine, although it performs quite well, it's still not "good"
But I don't do that much HDR again, so it's not really needed
I need to get my hands on the 6D to test it against the D800 before I believe the D800 is THAT much better
Thanks for your reply though Comment from : @TehFoxit |
Pick up a Nikon D800 You can push the shadows all day long without issue That's why they score so well at DXO This is a weakness of Canon cameras unfortunately There is quite a bit of noise in Canon cameras even at base ISO ranges in the shadows Even the Nikon D600 which I did a video dynamic range test can handle shadow pushing with hardly any noise Comment from : @learningcameras |
The way you push the shadows is too much, of course the cameras can't handle THAT much Comment from : @TehFoxit |
No way Comment from : @odinata |
forever best camera canon 5dmark2 ;) Comment from : @FtrvynE |
I would The image quality on the 6D is better for sure But the 6D will feel and handle more like a consumer body than the 5D2 would If you need a Pro body, save for the 5D3the difference between the 5D3 and 6D will be noticeable in handling and controls If you just want great image quality, the 6D will get you there I just find it was missing too much to be a decent camera for me I mostly missed the dual card slots, more focus points, and a couple controls Comment from : @learningcameras |
hahaha Comment from : @learningcameras |
Would you consider the 6D a better option than the older 5D MK 2?? Thanks Comment from : @Sigfofosauer |
If you're not happy with the 6D, send it TO MEEE!! ;-) Comment from : @Sigfofosauer |
I narrowed down to 6d vd 5d3 and your video decided I need to spend that extra $1000 Thanks for the 20 mins, well worth it Comment from : @steveofsd |
And Ken Rockwell is not a working photographer plus would rather shoot in medium JPG I agree with LC the 6D is basically pointless Comment from : @shiftonephoto |
Very comprehensive review Thanks very helpful Comment from : @rawh321 |
All in all a fair and good comparison And 2 very good cameras If you can miss the extra $1000 go for the 5D MkIII or add an extra 600 and buy a D600 and a 6D :D That would be my choice Comment from : @rdoetjes |
I use the 6D mainly for video and it our performs the D600 in this case The attenuator in the mic interface is a win for me Because we use line levels A profilmer will never adjust his audio midshoot, you set them up before hand
I never use AF for video and hardly ever use it for photography because I mainly do still live and scenery 2 SD cards would be nice but the 128GB cards, I swap them out when they are full and dump them to my raid on my laptop Comment from : @rdoetjes |
Keep in mind the 6D is the only other full frame sensor camera in the lineup other than the extreme pro 1DX so, obviously the 6D will be the 2nd best camera (at least in Canon's lineup) That doesn't mean that I loved it If you read my review on the 6D at learningcameras, it's not that the 6D takes a bad picture, it's that it is not really the best camera at anything There is no real market that I would recommend the 6D for Take a look at my full review on the website Comment from : @learningcameras |
Even though I do shoot Canon, I did like the Nikon D600 better than the Canon 6D The 6D is a tiny bit better in low light but otherwise the D600 was a better camera In many ways, the 6D felt like a 60D with a really nice full frame sensor It's not a bad camera, and it takes a great picture, but functionally it has many weaknessessuch as only 1 SD card slot (huge for me), no flash (not a big deal for me), 11 point AF (not cool), no headphone out, no manual audio for video while recording Comment from : @learningcameras |
Ken Rockwell's review says, "The Canon 6D is the world's second-best DSLR regardless of price, right behind the very similar Canon 5D Mark III" I do not get the same impression from you Would you say the 6D is the best camera for the price? Is there a better full-size sensor camera in this price range? Comment from : @mediamannaman |
If no white balance button on the 6D, can white balance be adjusted with post production software? Comment from : @mediamannaman |
While the 6D will take better images than the 7D, there are some areas that will feel like a downgrade I think the 5D3 would be more of an upgrade for you, though it is a good deal more expensive There may be a new 7D in the next 6 months if you can hang on for a while that will likely be under $2000 but other than that, I would keep the 7D or upgrade to the 5D Comment from : @learningcameras |
Your right that the 6D is rated to a lower EV rate, but I took the light down to just about pure darkness and both still focused so IF the 6D is better, you will not notice it unless you shoot in light darker than what you can visually see in Plus, the 6D only has 1 of these nice focus points while the 5 center points on the 5D3 are dual cross type with 41 cross type points I couldn't get the 6D to focus using the other 10 points while the 5D did still focus using other points Comment from : @learningcameras |
It's all about the AF for me, the 5d mk2 is great but the AF is appalling, forget about off-centre points I ended up with a 5d mk2 and 7d to cover the situations I photographed in, now the mk3 covers all of them If you don't need the AF and don't shoot very low light that often the 5d mk2 is a great way to go Comment from : @snarkishly |
If you're recording sound for an important pro interview, I would never record into a DSLR Way too compressed Get yourself a zoom mic or something similair Comment from : @CapturaVideo |
